Nice Office and Colleagues. But Leadership and Culture Hold You Back

      Anonymous employee
      Former employee
      Sydney
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      * Modern, well-equipped office space. * Friendly and supportive colleagues at the non-management level.

      Cons

      * Leadership often avoids addressing mistakes consistently, sometimes overlooking issues when it involves favored individuals. * Some senior staff appear disengaged yet still receive recognition, which can feel discouraging to others. * Management tends to micromanage and relies on subjective evaluations over objective performance. * High performers may feel undervalued or overlooked, while others are favored based on personality rather than results. * When mistakes happen, the manager’s common response is “I’ll just do it,” which comes across as impatient and avoids coaching opportunities. This discourages learning and affects team morale. * Feedback channels don’t feel open or responsive. * Limited flexibility, below-average compensation, and modest benefits. Advice to Job Seekers: Consider carefully whether this is the right environment for your growth. While the office and team are positive at the peer level, the leadership culture may not support development or recognition in a fair and consistent way.

CMC's Toxic Environment and Management Failures

      Pros

If you look at my reviews in Cons section, you can tell that I do not believe there is one good reason that exists to work for this company.

      Cons

This review reflects my personal experience, as well as that of my colleagues across various departments. - The management is stuck in the past. Given how much has changed in recent years, they must stay up with the times rather than depending on outdated customs. - "YES" culture is the sole culture present at CMC. It is not acceptable for anyone to voice opinions, challenge the decisions made by managers, or voice criticism of any kind regarding the organization. - Managers and coworkers who are seeking to please high management for their titles will immediately label you as "NEGATIVE" if you voice criticism. - I choose this business because I believed that large corporations are dependable and well-established. This organisation has implemented three terrible redundancy programmes in the past 12 months. Although it may be a part of the essence of business, in the end, we must remember to act as HUMAN beings. - The CEO's hiring practices, which include being old school and only saying "YES" to things despite having forty years of experience, are the company's largest problem. - The organisation experiences a high turnover rate, with most employees leaving after just four to six months. So if you're seeking for work and thinking about applying at CMC, avoid it at all costs. If you decide to take a position, you will understand what I am trying to say here. - Due to redundancy and high turnover, everyone is handling the workload of 2-3 people without any recognition. Managers have started promoting the idea that if you're working at 100%, you should question yourself and strive to give 150% or 200%. This is the most outrageous thing I have ever heard in my career. - There is no career progression or growth at this company. Advancement depends on personal connections and group chat affiliations rather than your contributions in your current role. Your hard work and achievements do not influence your career advancement. - They offer no career development opportunities and provide zero training. Employees have to pay for their own training out of pocket. Despite advertising LinkedIn Learning, it is the worst option since all the courses are outdated, some being as old as ten years. - Managers here are indecisive and lack project management skills. You might agree on a project timeline, expecting delivery in eight months, only to receive an email overnight stating that it now needs to be completed in eight weeks. As a result, talented employees are resigning one by one due to these constant changes and mismanagement. - People aren't leaving this company to advance their careers; they are leaving because they are unhappy, depressed, or seeing a therapist due to work-related anxiety and stress. When you bring these concerns to HR or your manager, the only response you get is, "We provide phone support. You can call them if you feel unwell." But they will not do anything to change the situatuon. - There is no mental health support at this company. They show complete disregard for employees' mental well-being. - There is absolutely no work-life balance at this company. They forced everyone to return to the office with only three days' notice, causing significant issues for many employees who couldn't arrange childcare in time. However, this rule wasn't applied to everyone—those at certain levels or friends with upper management were allowed to continue working from home. - The salaries here are significantly below market standards. I recently secured a new role with a much higher pay increase and realized how much time I had wasted. Many employees have been stuck with the same salary for years, and some received only a meager $1,000 raise this year, despite the company laying off around 400 people. It's an absurd situation. - No one exceeds expectations in their performance reviews here. Even if you give your all and achieve a lot throughout the year, department managers instruct line managers to cap ratings at 3 out of 5. A rating above 3 would warrant a pay raise and promotion, which the company is unwilling to provide. - In the past six months, they implemented a new restriction requiring everyone to be in the office by 8:30 a.m. and to stay until at least 5:30 p.m. - They began micromanaging by introducing arbitrary KPIs that require employees to submit activity reports every two hours.
