What is the retirement plan like at Ross Stores?

Love my co-workers and my boss but be careful...

      Pros

Love my team and my boss. We support each other and always make it fun. Love the new CEO. He is a breath of fresh air and is focused on making us better. Diversity and Inclusion is a high point. Even though the Buying Office is mostly white and women, the company has continued to focus on including everyone and making us feel welcome.. The training is comprehensive. Ross provides valuable training in buying, negotiating, analysis, and time management. I really learned how to think like a merchant. There are career growth opportunities with a lot of internal promotions and career paths in Buying and Planning. Ross provides a great benefits package, including health coverage and 401k and bonuses.

      Cons

There is no work-life balance. This results in long hours and significant stress, impacting time away from work. Could not even take time off for a funeral or a medical appointment without being scrutinized and questioned by HR. Pay is lagging. They promise promotions and pay increases but do not deliver even when they see your results. Management is all over the place, depending on your department. Very inconsistent from one team to another. There are a lot of micromanagers. High Expectations for everything, and they always focus on the negative. There is a culture of tearing down and criticism even when things go right or are successful.

      Pros

      They offer a 401k plan.

      Cons

The customers are the worst I've ever had to interact with. The pay is NOT worth the work they have you do. You can't do anything if someone just walks out with a bunch of merchandise (EAS and all). You are timed at the register. You're timed doing markdowns. You're timed doing cash office. You're strictly timed in stock room. Just about the only positions you aren't timed for are SPS and fitting room. SPS might be the worst position of all. I was the best at my job in my district (per our district manager), possibly in the region (again, per my district manager) and all I got for it was a "thanks for your hard work". No pay raise, no real recognition, no bonus, not even a gift card. What I had to endure to be the best at my job was: yelling, stealing, verbal harassment, cussing, and threats of violence up to and including death. My safety is not worth what they paid me to stand at the door and take all of that. I never felt safe in that position. I'm glad I'm now salesfloor, but it isn't much better because now I am required to learn how to and perform everyone else's job! I am paid the highest out of the non-management at my location and it still isn't a livable wage.
