What is the retirement plan like at Synopsys?

Pros

Customer engagement is quite strong. There is excellent interaction with Fortune 500 companies. You can expect to work closely with application teams, sometimes from within their network. Your names are the top of all reports, your technical advice is respected and usually followed, and application teams will look to you for recommendations. Managers are technically skilled and are usually able to drive a plan forward that results in a positive improvement for the office or the larger SIG department. Management respects your opinion and is very willing to give you career opportunities whenever possible. Their door is almost always open if you need to run something by them. Compensation is good and was recently re-aligned with industry norms, so you can ignore any pre-2018 salary reports on this site. Mid-level security consultants can expect to see 76-80k, not counting 401k matching at 3k, ESPP stock at a 15% discount, or variable bonuses or profit-matching. Work-life balance is not imbalanced by management and there's generous PTO. Other perks include numerous training opportunities, sponsorship to visit security conferences, group leaders who are technically strong and good teachers, and breakfasts in the office once a week. For some reason, the job descriptions discuss travel, but there are 0 travel requirements, so you can settle in if you have a family.

Cons

The Bloomington office is part of Synopsys' managed security services. The work tasks, especially the more automated ones, are pre-structured, which can result in somewhat repetitious work. This is largely balanced by the dynamics of different clients and the complexities of the application at hand. The Bloomington office coordinates with the Bangalore office, but tends to be somewhat isolated from the rest of the company, even within the set of 350 security employees within the larger hardware-focused company. Management is working to improve this. There is also a known knowledge ceiling. Once you master the set of technical services, next steps include leadership, management, or moving to a different office. This can usually be accomplished in two or three years. Management is slowly working on this.

Pros

- Office is just near the SF Caltrain station, very walkable - Great work life balance, no fierce competition and tendency to rush things - Dedicated focus on diversity and nice work culture - Very smart people, the analysis team is comprised of PhDs and application teams also have quality people as the hiring standards are high - The SIG division is growing and with the launch of the new Polaris SaaS platform, business is expected to grow a good amount Benefits: - 4% 401K match - ESPP (15% discount, max 10% of base salary) -10-12% annual bonus - Access to free Coursera and other learning resources - Reimbursements for education expenses - Caltrain pass for the full month / clipper card reimbursements - Weekly massages (limited spots) - Fruits, Snacks, coffee

Cons

- The main issue is about the compensation, pay is average / below average. - The promotions do not have any significant impact on the total compensation - No catered lunch or dinner like other places - Not much team building activities, may be once or twice a year

Advice to Management

- Have more team building activities so that employees feel connected to the company and among themselves - The learning curve for the security domain is high and the quality of engineers recruited is also high, pay them above average to avoid churn because ultimately the cost of churn is almost equal to or much higher than paying the existing employees and keeping them.

- Weekly massages (limited spots)

Does Synopsys offer parental leave?

Pros

Market rate pay Highly technical colleagues and management Interesting technical challenges in Applications Engineering Great work-life balance Reasonably flexible working hours Improved attempts to boost employee morale with events

Cons

Limited everyday perks for a Silicon Valley software company Limited growth, mainly as an individual contributor Entrenched, older management Lack of rotation program Lack of pay transparency - It's an outdated attitude. Lack of gender diversity Unequal parental leave - Denying equal parental leave to men hurts new fathers and hurts women who are disproportionately burdened with child care. In the same vein.. Lack of child care center, even in HQ. Work can be monotonous if you are not highly driven by technical topics. Not the company's fault. Such is the EDA industry.

Advice to Management

Modernize your employee engagement amd compensation practices. Walk the talk, loudly and prominently, to promote gender equity in pay, work and work-life balance. (See: Intel)

Unequal parental leave - Denying equal parental leave to men hurts new fathers and hurts women who are disproportionately burdened with child care.
