      Software Engineer Interview

      15 Dec 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Aha!

      Interview

The interview from hell: I accepted a phone screen interview for the "Software Engineer" position that I found on a job posting forum. The interview invite did not mention a video call and it did not mention anything about sharing any personal code, open source code, or code from previous jobs. Right off the bat, the interviewer mentioned that this would be a video call, not a phone call, and to join the link they just sent me to my email. I joined the video call and went with the flow; however, there was no mention of a video call in the original interview invite and I work remotely, so I wasn't dressed properly for an interview. We dove into technical details, asked me about my experience, etc. Later in the call the interviewer asked to see some recent code I'd worked on - this was not mentioned previously. I do not normally contribute to open source software, but I do have a side project, so I tried to find something to show in my side project that I was proud of. After showing some of my code that I recently worked on and was proud of, the interviewer noticed one of my pages was a bit slow (a different set of code) so this person said "Let's look into why it's slow" - already really annoyed at this process, I reluctantly agreed to dig through some crap code I'd written months ago for fun. The interviewer 'debugged' my code - actually got the root cause of the problem wrong - and made some snarky comments. After feeling completely defeated by sharing some bad code, the interview went on with more technical questions. I was capable of answer all, but one. I hit a wall when I did not know the answer to one technical question - to which my response was "I don't know, I've never dug into that before" - since this was a video interview, I immediate saw his face drop and his body language went from positive to completely negative. I knew the interview was over right then and there. The interviewer asked if I had any questions - I was generally interested in the company and wanted to know about the company. I asked about the company culture on a fully distributed team and asked about yearly company get-togethers. Half way through the interviewers' answer, they got off track and said "... well, you know, sometimes we just have to tell candidates they're not suited for the role. We're looking for a tech lead to mentor younger engineers..." and then they barely continued their answer to my actual question. The role I applied for was "Software Engineer" not "Senior Software Engineer" not "Tech Lead". The role and description I applied to did not mentioned anything about what this interviewer was looking for. The interview process was a nightmare. I don't know of this person didn't have a structured process to interview and just "winged" it, or if they generally have a terrible interviewing process at Aha. Unfortunately the experience was so bad, I'll never apply here again.

Hi, My name is Chris. I am the CTO at Aha! and a co-founder. I am sorry to read that you had a negative experience during the hiring process with us. And I appreciate that you took the time to bring it to our attention. We do our best to set expectations related to video calls and interviews, but it sounds like there was a disconnect. Because we are a 100% distributed company almost all of our conversations use web video. It is true that we typically hire full-stack engineers who want to work on a significant aspect of product functionality from back-end algorithms through to the user interface. Therefore, we do ask fairly technical questions and do appreciate reviewing some code. Our goal is to get a sense of your end-to-end experience. Thanks again for taking the time to meet with us. We have talked internally about your experience with our team leads and wish you the best.

      Interview

The recruiter asks you generic questions. Look up the company on Reddit about how their job ads run 24/7. They seem to be banking interviews for some reason. Feels very phishy.

Yes. It is true. Our jobs have been consistently running for 12 years. That is because we are consistently hiring for a number of positions and have been from the beginning. This is true in engineering and in customer success. There is no additional reason they are posted – aside from the fact that we are trying to hire people. We do not spend time meeting with people who we do not think could be well aligned with the role and company. We do not have time for that. Now, the company was fully bootstrapped and we focus on organic and profitable growth. We are a $100M company but the team is relatively small. This means that we are not the right place for everyone but I know that we do everything we can to treat every candidate with respect. We hope that you find the ideal role that you are looking for.

While it is nice that they don't require live coding, you might find it challenging to talk through unfamiliar code on the screen. It's not a helpful measuring step, so your mileage may vary.

      Interview

The first interview was with a recruiter, the second interview was with the managers, and the third was with the senior developers of the team. The first two were conversational and the last was a technical interview that consisted of answering questions about the programming language.
