      Full Stack Software Engineer Interview

      19 Sept 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Cboe (New York, NY) in Jul 2018

      Interview

Outside recruiters contacted regarding the role within the team at CBOE. Company is reputed and has great history. But the manager and the team I was interviewed with was all not qualified enough even. First was a phone interview with hiring manager who asked me quick questions from Python including problem solving. generators, loops, how to get individual letter fro number formatted input. eg. given 123 , get 1, 2 ,3 separately. I even gave better solution and manager noted that to me on the call itself. He spontaneously told me about the next steps. He gave me trade data processing related problem and I solved it using database approach as well as python dictionaries. He liked it very much. I was immediately invited to on site interview with the team. I found the team has 3-4 developers some with only 1 years exep with no comp science background even., other 2-3 at the most 2-3.5 years exp . I have over 6 years exp plus all done in comp science still team rejected. More to that, my interview only lasted for 1 hr 45 mins and I solved 3 programming questions on actual editor, all worked and gave correct outputs. Went over resume questions and at the end, recruiter got feedback my programming capabilities are not strong. To me it really felt during the interview that manager was nice person but 3-4 team mates were playing politics. They did not greet at all since beginning and kept distance as they were just juniors with no real OOPs background. and Manager simply relied on his team in making decision. Also, the problem given to be solved at home was something no other candidate could most likely solved in a given time frame it seemed. As manager told me and also communicated through rec that tell candidate to be precise while giving the timeline as other candidates failed already. But I did it, gave two solutions - not just one. still they rejected. I would accept the rejections if I had failed to solve or answer any questions. But I ran all programs in front of team and they acknowledged output ..phew but did not want anyone senior to existing kids.Kids played politics in the interview. Beware candidates, do not waste your time in days in solving problems if the team is not well qualified. They do not want to see senior person to give them orders.
