      Data Scientist Interview

      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at DoorDash in Jun 2019

      Interview

A very protracted and frustrating interview process that doesn't respect candidates' time and is riddled with a lack of transparency and communication. I've lost a lot of respect for the company after this process. The general process was over about 2 months: phone screen w hiring manager --> take home test --> case study via videochat --> onsite --> follow-up case study via videochat & chat with manager The take home challenge, as others have already commented, is quite open ended and is a lot of work. I can understand how take home assessments have their place in the interview process but most of the difficulty in this assessment is in how poorly formatted the data is and in navigating what you're exactly supposed to answer. I then did a video chat with a data scientist through a case study question and then an onsite. After over a week of no update, I followed up and was asked to chat with the hiring manager over alignment of possible projects. The way this was communicated to me made it clear that this was a chat over projects and not a technical interview - I even clarified and made sure of that. I video chat with the manager at that time and promptly get another technical case study interview that I wasn't prepared for. I get notice later that they wouldn't be moving forward with my candidacy. The recruiter did later acknowledge the miscommunication and apologized, for whatever that's worth. I will say that the data scientists I met were generally very nice and mostly knowledgeable, although there was a wide discrepancy in skill levels. There's a lot of former consultant types in the data science org at DoorDash and it's reflected in their interview style -- besides the ridiculous take home assessment, there wasn't a single technical question asked, it was all case studies. But I'm not a fan at all of how long the process was, how unnecessarily burdensome it is regarding the take home assessment and the sheer number of interviews I had to do, and the lack of communication and transparency in what to expect. The recruiter for the role is new and they seem to have changed their recruiting process recently, with the the candidates suffering for these errors. Overall I think it was a waste of time.

      Interview

I applied online and after about a week, I received an email from the recruiter with a 15-question questionnaire. The next day, they scheduled a 1-hour interview consisting of a 30-minute case study and 30-minute SQL round. I spent significant time preparing and felt the interview went well. However, I received a rejection within 15 minutes after the interview ended. Honestly, the process felt discouraging. It almost seemed like the interview was conducted more for internal interviewer training than genuine hiring consideration. If you're interviewing there, I’d suggest treating it mainly as practice and interview experience rather than getting overly invested in the outcome.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at DoorDash (Chicago, IL) in May 2026

      Interview

Good thing they don't have recruiter screening. The first step is SQL (30 mins) followed by case study (30 mins). Looks like they just interview for the sake of training their employees. Literally waste of time preparing for Doordash. I reading all the reviews about toxic work culture. I should have taken it easy. The recruiters just give 1 min intro. I have completed all the SQL questions and even explained them to the recruiter. Case study also went well but I have received rejection within 3 hrs. Its disspointing that I spent whole week preparing for it even after reading the reviews.

      Interview

they only test sql, seems like median level but only 30 mins to do 4 questions. not sure how well I did. For the case study, I feel like I been asked a werid question : the interviewer start with "if we go back in time XXX " I know I'm done. The question is nothing like I prepared.
