I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Hitachi Vantara in December 2018.

    Interview

The process was overall smooth, the hiring manager was very clear of what he was looking for. I interviewed with other members of the team and they were great to talk to. Very conversation interview.

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Hitachi Vantara (Orlando, FL (US)) in January 2018.

    Interview

Had an absolutely terrible experience with this company. I was astounded by the lack of professionalism.

An external recruiter contacted me and arranged a phone screen and a technical interview with Hitachi Vantara in January. After completing the technical interview, I received feedback from the manager who said, "We want someone with 2 more years of experience" (not even sure what that means since time is arbitrary). That was fine; I moved on with my job search.

One month later, an internal Hitachi recruiter contacts me and says a few more job positions opened up, and that the same manager from before remembered my name and wanted to do another interview. A face to face interview was arranged. They cancelled the interview 2 days prior to the scheduled date without telling me why. The Hitachi recruiter didn't even find out about the cancellation until the following week, and told me the interviewers were going to be out of the office that day. He said he would work on rescheduling.

Two weeks passed, and I still didn't hear back. The external recruiter who originally coordinated the first interview then contacts me, and says Hitachi Vantara changed their minds AGAIN, and decided to not interview me anymore. They contacted HER and didn't even notify me.

I am appalled about how rude this is - it's common decency to not waste someone's time, or get someone's hopes up as if these people have never had to search for a job before. Do not waste your time with Hitachi Vantara.

    Software Engineer Interview

    Average Interview

    Application

I interviewed at Hitachi Vantara (San Francisco, CA (US)) in December 2017.

    Interview

Interview is standard. One thing to note is probably the Engr lead seemed to ask me the same question in phone interview and onsite interview. The director seemed to be a very nice person and I did like him a lot. And I'm especially interested in one of their projects and really thought it will be a fresh good start.
Everything is pretty smooth and they gave me oral offer. Since I have some visa issue, I asked their immigration team right after I got the oral offer. They told me they're okay with my current situation and then we came to the negotiation package stage. Just yesterday, right after I orally accepted their offer, I got a call from recruiter saying unfortunately, they're not moving forward with the offer because of my current visa issues.!!!!!!Why not say so a month ago when I asked you. After that, the recruiter, the hiring manager is no longer reachable. Expected, right?
Overall, to be fair, the whole interview process is fine. It is just how they flipped over on me after I accepted the offer really broke my heart.
I seriously suggest candidates to play very cautiously with this company. Don't trust them too much, don't take their words that seriously. Honestly, the pay is just-so-so, the project is pretty excited but I guess people can somehow learn from my experience how they're gonna treat you as a candidate or employee.
Just a note, if they told me at the beginning they're not okay with my visa case or at least apologized after wasted my whole month and flipped over, I won't be so furious now. But they didn't.

    Software Engineer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Waltham, MA (US)
    Declined Offer
    Negative Experience
    Average Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Hitachi Vantara (Waltham, MA (US)) in November 2017.

    Interview

There were a few phone screenings, an online code pair session, and a half-day in person interview. The primary reason I'm leaving this review is because of how they handled travel. I was living out of state, and had to fly in to Boston. I was asked to pay for the ticket and accommodation and the promise of reimbursement. Well, that was in November 2017 and now it's May 2018 and I have nothing in hand. I email them every month asking what the status of my reimbursement is, and get a canned reply of "it's processing, on it's way". A $500 lesson learned, I guess. Get them to pay for your ticket up front.

    Interview Questions

    • The phone screenings and code pair sessions were pretty standard. For the in-person interview, there were a number of white boarding and algorithms questions. I was interviewed by 4 (or 5?) different interviewers, each of whom had their own interview style. The one I remember most clearly was about class design for a specific scenario that judged how well I could utilize inheritance and create DRY code.   Answer Question

    Software Engineer Interview

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Hitachi Vantara (Waltham, MA (US)) in March 2018.

    Interview

I applied through an agency, had a coding test on coderpad. The interviewer asked 2 questions string manipulation and one more which I dont remember (but it was easy too). Then was called for an onsite interview where I had 4 rounds(was supposed to have 5 but one of the interviewers was on sick leave).

    Interview Questions

    • First round was more like an overview round about the company, second was purely white board coding and the questions were of leetcode medium difficulty, then some very detailed questions about my projects(I have 4 years of experience in India), then another whiteboarding 45 mins round but I guess he was more interested in how I tackle the question and my thinking process rather than the solution (I completed all the questions he asked though). The questions were related to sessions, threading, concurrency, design problems etc. After this another 45 mins coding test, the interviewer sat next to me and asked me to solve a question from Hacker-rank and wanted me to speak aloud the solution I was thinking. After I solved the first question he asked me to select a question myself but this time he wanted the perfect solution to the question. I did not join as salary was way less than Massachusetts standard plus it was a contract to hire position   Answer Question

The process was great! Interviewer was very clear about the process and made it easy to follow. Gave a brief introduction about the company then asked me to talk about my resume and favorite project. Then there was the code test.

    Interview

Total Waste of Time even applying at this company. There is no proper communication during the recruitment process. HR took a month to schedule the phone interview. Did not get a response for two weeks after the phone interview which was an easy coding question checking for Balanced Parentheses which I solved easily. After two weeks I got a mail from HR saying we are not moving forward.

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Hitachi Vantara (San Francisco, CA (US)) in January 2018.

    Interview

Interview went great with the first two interviewers. I interviewed with their boss who was a woman, and she was very short, impatient and unprofessional. Criticized the career I'm currently at now. I knew immediately I was not going to progress in the first 30 seconds based on her tone and demeanor. Probably for the best because if you can't even conduct a civil interview you don't belong in a leadership position.

    Interview

Initial contract from internal recruiter was quick as was subsequent phone and on-site interviews.

The post-interview process left a lot to be desired. Poor communication on next steps. Typical corporate behavior I suppose, even for a 'startup' like Vantara.

    Senior Software Development Engineer Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Hitachi Vantara (Orlando, FL (US)) in December 2017.

    Interview

I worked with a recruiter. The process was short and painless.

1 hour pre-screen technical phone interview with a SW engineer. Technical questions mostly about java programming language. No coding, screen sharing, or camera required.

Onsite interview scheduled a few days later. 4 x 30 minute interviews one on one with 4 different individuals.
    1. Interview with hiring manager - mostly behavioral and job/team fit questions.
    2. Technical interview with Lead SW developer - he asked me to code a function. He handed me his laptop and described the problem, I just needed to fill in logic for the function - java. No whiteboard coding :)
No tricks, gimmicks, or puzzles, just straight forward questions.
    3. Technical/leadership/team fit interview with scrum master
    4. Behavioral/team fit interview with Product owner

Got immediate feedback through recruiter that it went well and that I should expect an offer. Impromptu call with HR VP a couple weeks later - he asked a few behavioral questions and then extended the offer and described benefits. Got the offer letter a few days later. I asked to extend start date out a few weeks, no issues. From first contact with recruiter the whole process took about a month.
