      Manager Interview

      6 Jan 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Johnson & Johnson

      Interview

The entire interview process was extremely one-way and offered minimal opportunities for the applicant to get to know their interviewers. All interviews were conducted in an impersonal, conversational panel fashion with multiple people on a zoom call together asking you generic / scripted behavior questions about non-technical topics with no direct reference to the job specifications (think: "name one time you overcame a challenge"-tier questions). Once you answer, they pass on the interview to the next questioner on the Zoom call - with minimal feedback, follow up questions, or any resemblance of a real human back-and-forth conversation. I came away knowing almost nothing about the job, team culture, or any one of the 5+ individual interviewers, since on each of the 30-45 min calls I barely had over 5 mins of Q+A with each interviewer individually. On top of this, the lack of technical details in the questions made me question how seriously this element was taken on the job, as I feel any candidate who could answer generic behavior-based questions correctly could've done as well as I did on the interviews, with no actual objective testing of their technical competencies (such as a writing assignment, etc). I was not looped into any HR personnel prior to any interviews and first spoke to someone in HR only at the offer stage - also very unusual these days and doesn't provide you with an interview timeline, nor do you have anyone to serve as an impartial point of contact during the process if you had a sudden need to reschedule (I didn't, but that is a main purpose of HR recruitment). Finally, there was a 3 week gap in between the final interviews and offer, but I was told they would get back to me within the next week initially. With that said, one of the first things told to me by the hiring manager on the call where they told me I was receiving an offer was "Are you still interested in the role?", which totally gave off the vibes that 1.) this was a very undesirable role, as they seemed to have subconsciously assumed I might *not* be interested anymore despite my expressions of explicit interest during the interviews and no contrary indications after that from my end while I waited; and 2.) that they perhaps had first offered another candidate in the intervening 3 weeks and gotten rejected by them, and that I was thus their backup choice...

      Interview

I was contacted about 2 weeks after submitting my application online. Spoke with the recruiter and she gave some good information and guidance on the process. The same day I received an email from the hiring manager to discuss the role but via phone instead of their standard Teams meeting. The phone call was about 45 minutes long, however, I was not asked much which leads me to believe this was a filler interview and they already had a candidate in mind. I followed up a week later and never heard anything. It’s was disappointing to be ghosted by a company like this.

It's alright, High metrics, it really depends on your manager and team. Everything is silo'd. Hard to progress. Constantly focused on building new platforms instead of fixing those they already have.
