I interviewed for an attorney position for Levi Strauss in San Francisco. I had a phone interview first with a recruiter and then with the hiring manager. The phone interview went very well - the hiring manager even told me that he would love for me to come in for an on-site interview. That was the last time I heard from the company while the position was still open.
I did not get a response from the recruiter for 3 1/2 months, despite the fact that I either emailed or left her a voicemail about once every 2 weeks to try and check in. After my last email, she finally told me they'd made an offer to someone else. Of course by this point I was sure they had hired someone else, but I felt so disrespected as to be ignored for months that I became determined to continue emailing her until she actually got back to me. I will never consider working for this company again nor will I ever be a Levi's customer. I find it outrageous that an internal recruiter working for the company would think it's acceptable to ignore a candidate for 3+ months, AFTER the candidate has had a phone interview with the hiring manger. It's not like I randomly applied and talked to no one and then kept wanting to know if there was any interest. It is professional courtesy to give a response to someone after they have had an interview - especially if the person is following up at appropriate intervals and had a positive interview. Even if the response is simply "thanks, but no thanks." It's really not that hard to treat people with decency.
