      Senior DevOps Engineer Interview

      27 Jul 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at OVO (London, England) in Jan 2020

      Interview

1st stage: vid call interview with software engineering manager. went very well, mainly asked broad technical questions to gauge your technical skills & your personality to determine if potential good fit. 2nd Stage: 3 hour onsite technical interview broken down into 3 one hour slots. 1st one was a pair-programming exercise with a scala developer. I was allowed to implement the code in language of my choice (Java). The interviewer knew a bit of java too. 6 questions. each one harder than previous. code question was mainly about string manipulation and each question builds on top of previous. They want to see you solve in a TDD manner which would earn bonus points. You will definitely not have enough time to finish it within the hour as the interviewer would probe you, question your implementation details so that will take a bit of time. 2nd hour was system design session. They ask you to design something. You gotta drive the technical discussion. But beware, one of the interviewers I had probed me too far. He said wants to see my depth & breadth of technical knowledge which is fair enough. But some areas i just had no knowledge in; i already told her that I not that experienced in that area, not that I give up answering; instead i told them I would go away & research the topic and learn but still interviewer kept probing for something I just couldn't derive at. Then later questioned why I didn't talk about other areas of the system design in more depth - which is absurd given that they spent so much time stopping me at my tracks to talk something that i wouldn't derive at. I merely don't have time to go over that since they wasted so much time on a topic that I had no experience in. Otherwise, I would have gone over that part eventually. 3rd hour was a behavioural interview with an engineering manager of a particular team. completely behavioural this part. similar to 1st stage tel phone interview. Communications lead up to the final interview was very positive and then said they would like to take me on but then said I don't have experience in a particular thing so withdrew the offer and shut me off cold completely. (not even a keep in touch for the future). Don't recommend
