      Software Engineer Interview

      14 Mar 2019
      Anonymous employee
      Portland, OR
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Paylocity (Portland, OR) in Dec 2018

      Interview

I applied on December 2018 and the whole process took about 3 weeks. The process was very engaging and professional. I had an initial phone conversation with a technical recruiter. We spoke for about an hour and she asked me a few technical questions, but the main topics where related to my work experience. After the phone screen interview, I was invited to a video conference interview with 2 developers. I had to submit a complete web project. The technical interview took place almost 3 weeks after the first interview. It took about an hour and half and the we more than an interview it was like a code review where I had to explain my code. At the end of the code review they asked me some tough but fair general software development questions. A few hours after this second interview I got a phone call from the recruiter telling me that the initial feedback from the developers was positive and she asked me if I was open to a phone interview with the Director of Software Development. This last interview was about 3 days after the technical interview, and it lasted about one hours. During this interview I was explained in detail about the history of the company and its culture. I also had the opportunity to ask all the questions that I could possibly have. A couple of days later I received an email with a job offer that I happily accepted. I have interview with other companies before and the whole interview with Paylocity was amazing. It could not have been any better.

      Interview

First round was a Hiring Manager round in which he asked about tech stack, and more about the way of working. Nothing technical, just process related questions. I felt like he was more interested in tools and technologies used.

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Paylocity in Aug 2025

      Interview

The first round was a Recruiter screen, Second was an at-home technical challenge, which had 30 minutes to complete 20 questions (mostly multiple choice) about C# language-specific syntax. Very strange technical test. Definitely more suited to those who may have just completed a bootcamp or recently read a textbook.
