      Marketing Interview

      24 Jun 2024

      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Rakuten Kobo

      Interview

Three interviews, including an HR screening. Overall atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Interviews are focused primarily on situation-based questions. (i.e., tell me about a time...) It's best to come prepared with scenarios from past work experience with notable difficulties and successes.

      Question 1

Tell me about a time you encountered a difficulty at work and what you did to overcome it.

      Interview

Quite simple and straightforward. Asked standard interview questions, along with a few expected ones about the book industry — to see if you have a firm grasp of both tech and books.

Why do you want to work at Kobo? What's your experience in marketing?

      Negative experience

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Rakuten Kobo in Jul 2018

      Interview

I was very excited to be interviewed by this company and for this role. However, the entire interview process was a horrible experience and left a lot to be desired. My first contact was with the HR Coordinator who was rude and unfriendly. Didn't do an introduction of what Rakuten Kobo did or what their values were. Didn't explain much about the role, just had 3 to 5 generic questions. I understand this is an interview for potential employees, however, this is also an interview for the candidates as well. The lack of warmth and general interest in the interview process from the Coordinator should have set off red flags, but I was willing to ignore this as I really wanted the role. The interview with the manager was a good experience, and provided the clarity and interaction I expected from Rakuten. However, following up after the interview for next steps with both the hiring manager and the coordinator was laughable. I heard nothing back over email or over the phone - I was essentially ghosted. Overall, I think Rakuten Kobo is an interesting company and the ABM they do is top notch. However, the entire interview experience was horrible and I wouldn't suggest anyone interview at RK as it was a waste of time.

Why do you want this role? What ABM (account based marketing) have you done?
