      Entry Level Software Engineer Interview

      21 Jun 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Revature in May 2023

      Interview

Initial phone interview (20 Minutes), they ask you about your background, education, and very basic programming concepts. Questions about if you are okay with relocating etc... They then have you take a ~50-minute skills assessment, which they provide a study guide for (lol). If you are a CS major and know your stuff, you won't even need to look at the study guide, it's concepts you learned in your first year of college. Scheduled a second interview after my assessment, and once I was told how much they offer for the "paid" training and then your first year of work - I almost felt insulted. 45,000 - 55,000 and they put you in a very high cost of living area, you will basically be below the poverty line for the area you live in. When I told the recruiter the pay range was quite low, his response was "Well I have 2000 other resumes sitting in front of me from people that will do it for that amount of pay". Once I heard that, needless to say, I understood the kind of company this is and the rest of the phone call was quite short. Here is the bottom line - they are looking for fresh Computer Science grads that they can take advantage of because they don't know any better. No matter how well you do on the assessment they will try to get you to do unpaid training, and then put you through paid training (at minimum wage) after which also locks you into a 2-year contract that if you break by leaving early you owe them a large sum of money. They will try to convince you that it's the only way to enter the software engineering field unless you were a top-of-class student with internship experience at a top-tier tech company which just isn't true. TLDR - If you went to school for Computer Science at a college/university that has a good ABET-accredited program - DO NOT even bother wasting your time applying or having a phone call with this company. Even if you are having trouble finding a software job, have some self-respect and hold out until you land a respectable one. You do not want to work for this company, these people are literally the scum of the earth.

      Interview

First an aptitude test which was majorly mcqs, quite easy for people with a computer science background but they also allow candidates with non cs to join so it might be the reason. Then you can take part with their unpaid training which they teach in depth over basics upto creating API for backend using Spring and Java then you get enrolled for their paid program waitlist where they contact you if they have a client that fits with you.
