      Field Engineer Interview

      19 Nov 2012
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Little Rock, AR
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at SLB (Little Rock, AR) in Nov 2012

      Interview

First, dropped off my resume at the career fair. Got an email 2 days later about setting up an interview. The phone interview was straight forward just going through your resume and seeing what kind of person you are. The recruiter was very straight forward and told me that the position was hard. They also like to see that you like the outdoors. Got an offer to go to the second interview right at the end of the call. Entire interview took about 30 minutes. Second interview was in Conway/Little Rock, Arkansas. They set-up the interview details and flight information. From Thursday to Saturday with about 24 candidates from all over. Thursday: Started at 6:00pm and last till around 2:00am, which according to them was "early." First, they asked us to talk about ourselves and answer a question like "Who would you talk to from the past?" Next, they went over a presentation on the job and what it involves. Third, the had us present group presentations. We were given groups of 4 to present a segment of the field engineering position. My group was given Wireline (Cased Hole). The presentation is very tough due to the follow-up questions they ask. My guess is that they know you don't know the answer they just want to see you make an educated guess. Just think out loud. Further, pay attention when they explain how each segment works it will come in handy. Taking notes is the biggest advice I can give you at this point. They followed with a benefits presentation which was short. Subsequently, they break you into groups and have you construct a catapult with items like pipe cleaners, 2 soda cans, popsicle sticks, and tape. They really pay attention to how you participate in the group. They walk around and take notes. Be engaging and offer up some ideas and keep involved in constructing they want to see you try real hard. They will have you try to hit a target upon completion. Friday: Started at 7:00am going to project sites. We were lucky and went to a rig when they were doing direction drilling. We also got to go to a frac site. The site tours were amazing and really cool. It was a lot of fun seeing all the fields. There was a lot of information. They had read material on frac safety the night before and had to keep track of the violations throughout the visit. We went to lunch at a BBQ. Next, there was a round-table discussion with 4-5 relatively new field engineers who were very frank. They answered everything very honestly. We went back to the hotel and met with one recruiter to go through the violations at the frac site. The other was an exit interview where you filled out where you want to work and in what segment. They really want you to give a good reason so be knowledgeable and I think this is when you need to use those notes and know what you're talking about. Last, was dinner at a nice creole restaurant. Saturday: Fly home. I forgot to add earlier, they gave everyone a $100 debit card as a thank you for coming to spend as you please. The expired within 30 days. I didn't take notes and felt dumb during the exit interview. They want to see you be knowledgeable. A lot of people on Glassdoor say be social but I didn't get that vibe.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They mostly asked hard questions about the technical details of each segment during the presentations. Don't remember specifics.

It was an on campus hiring. First they shortlisted based on CV. Then second round was group discussion where we were given abstract topics like "Half filled glass of water" and were asked to discuss. This was also an eliminatory round. The final round was more of a HR round, they asked behavioural questions, few puzzles (very easy) and general knowledge questions
