Interview
The President of the company called me for an interview and asked about my skills. I'm primarily a graphic designer but have experience with web design, video editing, and many other areas. He asked if I had any examples of a web site I designed entirely with HTML. I said no because these days it makes more sense to use a content management system. I told him I often used WordPress for clients web sites. He said "that doesn't really tell me anything about your coding abilities." The thing is, THEIR web site is built with WordPress. They are a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software company. There are loads of CRM plugins for WordPress. Yet THEY don't have a plugin to integrate their CRM with their own WordPress web site. That doesn't tell me much about their coding skills....
He also asked if I did the marketing at my previous job. I told him I did the graphics for the marketing department, that we had a Marketing Director and Copywriters who came up with the content, and I was responsible for the presentation and overall appearance. He said, "It's really hard finding someone who can do graphic design, web development, marketing, SEO, and video production." You think?? That's called a "team". This "software genius" is apparently incredibly ignorant when it comes to what makes a successful marketing department. No wonder all their graphics, design, and marketing is pure garbage.
