      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Xero (Melbourne) in Aug 2025

      Interview

The initial interview was a phone call with a talent acquisition manager to understand the applicant and their experience. The second interview is a coding challenge on HackerRank. The challenge itself is about 45 minutes with 15 minutes left for discussion. The problems given are typically Data Structures and Algorithms (arrays, strings, and possibly pointers). Prepare for a for a few time and space complexity questions about your solution (big O notation). The third round is a system design interview. You're expected to design a system (ex: ticket booking system) at a high level and discuss why you made certain decisions. The next stage is the Loop Interviews. You'll basically be interviewed by the actual team that you'll be working with if you're selected. Prepare for behavioural and scenario based questions on leadership. Overall, everyone was friendly and professional. I didn't feel nervous during the coding challenge because I was constantly reminded that it doesn't need to be a complete solution. Mind your time in the system design interview and make sure you get to the core problem and discuss that as the main talking point.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Xero (Auckland, Auckland) in Sept 2021

      Interview

The interview was easy but the HR was totally ridiculous! Originally I applied for a development team lead, the HR told me that I should apply for a lead engineer role instead then I did. Received a senior level quiz about designing a flight board and then followed by a tech interview with 2 lead engineers, I answered all the questions with ease and that was nice and easy. Couple of days later I received a call from HR said they were happy with my tech interview and would organize a team fit interview which was going to be the final round for me, I told her I originally applied for a lead engineer but now it became a senior role without letting me know, the HR said she will let me know next day morning. A couple of hours later I received an email said they felt that there was still enough room for me to develop and they would like to consider me as an INTERMEDIATE ENGINEER! I don't understand what's going on with this HR, this is totally ridiculous, disrespectful and unacceptable, they seem to think lead engineers in other companies are just intermediate level in Xero! Just waste of time.
