    In July 2017, I moved from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Ottawa, Ontario with my family to start a new phase in my career, as a UX Manager at Shopify. We've now lived and worked in Ottawa for a year-and-a-half, and have just been approved for permanent residency in Canada.

Shopify – Why Work For Us?

The first Shopify store was our own

It's been our mission to make commerce better for everyone ever since

Nearly a decade ago we started an online store to sell snowboard equipment directly to those who loved the sport as much as us.

We could have listed our products on a number of marketplaces, but we wanted to own our brand and build relationships with our customers, along with selling our goods. Such a tool didn’t exist, so we built it for ourselves. We soon realized a number of other stores were in need of a hassle-free platform to build their retail business, and Shopify was born.


We focus on making commerce better for everyone, so businesses can focus on what they do best: building and selling their products. Today, merchants use our platform to manage every aspect of their business — from products to orders to customers, selling online, in retail stores, and on the go.

We've grown a lot since we started Shopify in 2006.

From a team of 5 working out of a local coffee shop, to a team of over 1500 working in 5 offices across North America. We’re really proud of our success and growth and we’ve worked hard to nurture our company values and culture. We encourage everyone to experiment, take risks, and push the envelope.

The opportunity to shape how retail works is in our hands.

Over the coming years, the way purchasing works will change at a fundamental level. Customers will expect options of where and how to buy: in-store or online, delivered or for pick-up. It’s an incredibly exciting time for this industry, and we’re going to be right at the centre of it.

  3. Simplicity - Strive to find the simplest solution to all problems. This is fundamentally difficult because we work on solving complex issues. If there is no simple solution, reframe the issue until one emerges. Simple doesn’t mean simplistic: a good example would be how we approach writing. It can often take more work in editing to get to the shortest, most straightforward piece, but the end result is a message others can read quickly and understand immediately.
  4. Act like an owner - We trust that you are the best at what you do. We want you to be entrepreneurial and own your domain. Be confident in your work , and make sure to communicate both your success and failures to your colleagues. We’re always learning from each other at this company. But acting like an owner extends beyond your own domain. Leave everything better than you found it. If it’s broken, either fix it yourself or find out who’s responsible for it. Magic happens when people care deeply about what they work on.
  5. Thrive on change - We embrace change. We thrive on antifragility. We encourage risks and trials. Many companies avoid change at all costs. We do the opposite. Sometimes we even change things up as an intentional injection of chaos. We love experiments. Every good idea is worth a 30-day trial. If it works, great! If it doesn’t, we’ve learned something. Every few months, we break from ‘business as usual’ to immerse ourselves in Hack Days. All projects are fair game, as long as the end goal is to add value to Shopify. There’s no limit to the creativity or scope of projects and only one rule: projects ‘ship’ when the time is up. We need all the ideas. The big, small, and differently shaped ones. Ideas can come from new recruits to old timers, in every area of the company. Every individual here provides a unique context and this is powerful.

Hack Days are a time to take a creative break from regular duties and to act on a pent up idea. To fail in a safe space, and learn from the experience. And to work with people outside of your usual circle (we have a lot of talented people who would love to teach you some new tricks).

We pulled together a team of people with various skills - design, front-end, and back-end development, and we went to work. While we did come away with a completed product, this Hack Days project was about exploration, not about a ‘good job’.     I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in September 2017.


    I have spoken to 3 different recruiters on 3 occasions in last one year. They never get back with a response after the "Life Story" call. I understand if they don't want proceed with the interview for some reason, but they should learn to say no. It is never a good idea to leave a candidate high and dry. When you put in so much time and effort to apply, the least you expect is pro active communication leading to full closure of the process.

    I hope they improve the process.
