Engineering staff are second-class citizens

Pros

The product is very promising and there is a a lot of potential for growth. Multiple solid contracts already secured. Engineers will be hands-on immediately with a lot of responsibility.

Cons

Engineering staff are overworked and underpaid. Young people just starting their careers are lured in by the idea of a startup, but are asked to work on nights and weekends without compensation. The culture encourages other teams to pile work onto the engineers and the managers do not stop this.

We are very sorry to hear you are having a negative experience up to this point feeling overworked and underpaid. Improving how work is getting done and collaboration across the various teams is very important to us and hope we can implement some changes soon. You pointed out compensation and we agree with you as we came to the realization we had to be more competitive. That is why we are in the middle of our mid-year reviews which will lead to merit increases across the board. We are confident this will help alleviate that problem while our additional benefits and perks continue to improve each year. Pros

This is a true start-up. Several things are not in place which I personally love because it's a chance to create how things are done but if you do not like that environment, then this isn't the place for you. A lot of growth has happened in just the past 2 years and the growing pains are starting to show in general. But there is so much potential here, it's really exciting. If Diversity is important to you, this place has been very strong in that area and covering so many demographics. To my knowledge, there isn't an official plan in place, so that speaks volumes to them as they're not doing it just to check a box, it's getting the best person for the job.

Cons

Monetary things that need improvement. Leadership has touched on all of these so I'm hopeful but they need to follow through. Compensation - I'd say we're at the bottom of what the market pays across the board and that's just not going to keep people around for the long haul. This includes raises and/or bonuses PTO - We're still at 2 weeks which is not good but coming into this year, they allowed 1 week of rollover so it was a slight improvement but they just need to offer more officially. Off the record, they are pretty flexible but many people won't rely on that, so it needs to be more official Benefits (for families) - The company does contribute to benefits but for families, it doesn't do much 401K doesn't have a match yet. Before this year, they didn't have a 401K period so hopefully there is a match soon Respect amongst colleagues needs to be improved. Some teams here can really go overboard with their unprofessionalism and it seems tolerated. A part of me wants to believe Leadership wants to observe it themselves first before doing anything but again, people will only stay for so long with that going on.
