The worst company I've worked for.

Pros

The engineering team is solid.

Cons

The two partners have never worked anywhere else, and it shows. It feels like they're going through the motions of running a company based on blog posts they've read, then testing it out on employees. They have huge egos but the work they've done is laughable (except for the engineering work). The CEO is arrogant, stubborn, and a horrible leader. He constantly ruins relationships with clients because of his ego. He doesn't know how to build trust, and blows people away with his arrogance. He always blames everyone else in the room when projects go bad but never takes responsibility for anything. He is incredibly immature and inexperienced, but thinks that he's seen it all and is competing on the same playing field as IDEO. He is totally reactive and irrational, always bouncing from one extreme to the next. He is distracting during meetings if he shows up at all. The President, or Chief Experience Officer, or whatever he's calling himself these days fancies himself a creative but wouldn't get hired as a Designer at any decent shop in town. All he does is spew jargon and make spreadsheets and make embarrassing designs. He's all about "process" but doesn't know how to actually get anything done. He talks a lot about transparency but reads the emails and IMs of employees because he's insecure and immature and paranoid. It was embarrassing to work for them.

Pros

Great location, awesome office, a couple solid people still hanging on. The work used to be unique, fun and challenging before management changed and all the core teams more or less fell apart. There used to be a stocked beer and keg, but think that has since stopped.

Cons

Some recent reviews are clearly trying to buffer for a rough time that hasn't really come to an end. (It's no secret that the remaining team was asked by management—or impersonated by management—to provide some more positive feedback here.) Since the management shakeup earlier in the year, all of the core leadership left and a lot of the most talented people went, too. With them went the integrity of work, most of the creative talent (design team is down to bare bones now) and any sense of vision for the company. It has been heartbreaking to watch everything come down to this: a big focus on getting dollars in the door, and not much else.

Thanks for your review and I appreciate the feedback. While our office is cool and in a great building, that’s not really what makes Copious special. It really does come down to the people here, and it’s more than just a couple good ones. In fact, each and every person here is committed, talented, passionate, and overall great people and we wouldn’t be where we are today without them. As you noted, revenue and profitability are a focus and it’s essential to any business's’ health. At Copious, we’re committed to having robust financial health and building a business that’s going to thrive for decades to come. As the for the integrity of the work — every person here cares about the impact they make and about creating great work. We pour ourselves into what we do and strive to do work that makes a positive difference. And it takes a team to do that level of work, not just one or even a few talented folks, but an entire team working together with common values, goals, and direction. Speaking of direction, after a leadership transition, I've since acted on feedback I received from the team about expressing our vision and mission more clearly. Now that it’s been shared its impacting who we are, how we work, and the value we provide. For those new to Copious, our purpose is to create an abundance of positive transformation in people and brands. We do that through equipping our people to deliver exceptional ecommerce experiences and business apps. The people we hire value doing the right thing, being a positive force, and creating with purpose. And finally, we love what we do, care about the clients we serve, and are fulfilled by the impact we make.
