Would Be Perfect if Lunch Break Was Included

Pros

- No crunch. Brief periods of overtime only when absolutely necessary and weekend days are usually given back in lieu. - Lovely people. - Great culture with lots of nice little perks, benefits and social stuff. - Genuinely approachable studio directors. - Mostly flexible working hours (see below).

Cons

- Lunch break is not included. It’s a 40 hour week but that doesn’t include lunch. So you’re expected to work 9-6, 10-7, etc, not 9-5, 10-6 like just about everywhere else. But you’re still expected to take an hour for lunch, making it a 45 hour week in reality. This is very strange and at odds with the culture the studio tries to promote. It’s presumably just what the directors (ex-Black Rock) are used to. I know of several people that are put off from applying for this reason, so the studio may struggle to attract staff, especially those commuting from further afield.

Pros

- Work-life balance is really great with flexible hours and the ability to work from home occasionally. - Everyone is friendly and you feel that you are working with friends and not co-workers. - Great perks like private health and dental insurance, gym membership, free food and drinks, board game nights, parties, etc. - Directors share updates with all the employees. - Always interesting and challenging projects with big companies.

Cons

- There are no code reviews apart from some buddy checks that are most of the time done quickly. Therefore it's not easy for employees to learn what they do right or wrong, therefore there is no room for personal development. - There are no clear criteria regarding how one is assessed. - They are keen for the team to produce quality work, but often this is not possible due to all the design changes that the client requests and the deadlines/target goals for each milestone. - Open plan in the office = noise = decreased productivity - Directors sometimes change design directions that they didn't necessarily have agreed on, to satisfy the clients.

Pros

good daily levels of autonomy.

Cons

- very poor salary. - promotions are arent reflected in salaries - can be very disorganized where youre waiting weeks or months between projects doing absolutely nothing. - most projects have an NDA attached even post launch you cant discuss your contribution. - generally felt like a second class citizen on external projects, waiting for emails from clients that are never returned. - completely remote during my time there. the teams didnt feel social at all.
