Pros

I worked for Amplify for 8 months and loved helping students learn to read -- kids were great. Most Amplify coaches (supervisors) were very supportive. Once hired, continuing training webinars (paid) were helpful.

Cons

I was hired for this position without ever speaking to a human, which was a first. All interviews are written and online. Initial training was a cluster -- to put it as nicely as possible. If you decide to work for Amplify, allow 2-3 times the amount of time indicated in onboarding material for training. Training is self-directed and paid up to a capped number of hours. Tutors are tested after every section. All tutors must have a background test run and are required to pay for the check. When I was hired, the background check was not reimbursed although that could have changed. Once training was complete, tutors were contacted for assignments based on hours/days they were available. I was available 4- days per week and only received assignments for 7-9 hours per week. This was a common complaint from tutors. Tutors provide their own equipment: PC or laptop (which is tested to ensure it meets Amplify standards) headset/earbuds, Wi-Fi, teaching materials (think of items teachers have in a classroom.) Tutors are paid one rate /hour for actual tutoring and a smaller hourly amount for lesson prep, which takes about an hour per session rather than the 1/2 hour tutors are allotted. Tech issues surrounding Blackboard login and functioning were very common (Amplify has a SLACK channel which is how tutors contact coaches -- if at tutor has an issue, they don't email a coach-- they post issue on SLACK.) If you are looking for a part-time job to supplement your current income, don't need consistent work or income, this could work but the frustration way outweighs the reward.

Thank you for your feedback. It's wonderful to hear that you enjoyed helping students and found the support of our coaches valuable. We appreciate your dedication over the past eight months. We are not happy that portions of your experience were unsatisfactory, and we will share your feedback with our team and make sure we do better. We have already incorporated some of the suggestions you made for this school year. The team revamped the onboarding process over the summer. Tutors also now indicate if they want to work more hours than they are assigned in their initial assignment, and as opportunities arise, they are contacted with additional opportunities. For the majority of tutors, Amplify does reimburse background checks. Thank you for sharing your thoughts; they guide us in making positive changes.

Pros

There are some very dedicated, talented and well intentioned people who work there. For awhile it felt like the organization was building and doing great things. The salary felt fairly competitive with the industry standard.

Cons

Don't look too closely under the hood if you don't want to stop believing in the illusion. The product is no longer as strong as it once was, the PD and CS have gone way downhill, they care more about profit than people and they are no longer mission driven but success and money driven. They talk a good game, but many people there are ruthless so watch your back. They do a good job of making you feel like it's the best place to work and you are lucky to be there, for awhile, but when the blook is off the rose, watch out.
