Not where you want to be in IT - Senior Applications Developer CNO Financial Group Employee Review

Pros

Decent People. Good work/life balance. Flexible about work hours and occasional work from home.

Cons

Overly restrictive and regimented SDLC process (they promised they were reworking it the entire time i worked there, and apparently for at least a year before that as well) Literally hundreds of tiny systems jury rigged to work together. IT completely driven by business wants (not needs) and every single thing had to be customized. Incredibly Silo'd even within IT. Impossible to even ask another group a question without submitting a question and waiting. Then 90% of requests are sent offshore and take multiple days of back and forth emails to fix what should have only required a 5 minute conversation. Have weekly meetings about production problems and how to prevent them from happening again, but no one is ever held accountable. Shortly after I left they outsourced almost all IT to a staffing company. People who wanted to stay had to sign a 1 year contract with that company. Most have had their work moved offshore and been given assignments at other companies. Huge multi step architectural review process to implement anything new (in addition to the SDLC), but yet no company wide architectural guidelines.

Pros

Non Stop Learning each and everyday

Cons

Working in this company lacks any sense of relaxation. There is constant pressure, stress, and frequent layoffs. Additionally, employees are required to continuously prove themselves, and even after proving their worth, their work is undervalued due to discrimination and bullying, which are unfortunately ingrained in their work culture.
