Decent company, toxic team(s) - Software Engineer Diamond Web Services Employee Review

Pros

Owners were very kind, good support staff, second easiest interview process I've ever had, and I was compensated very handsomely.

Cons

Members of the team were incredibly toxic. They purposefully engaged in controversial and divisive conversations (e.g., politics, religion, etc.) to prove they could disagree and still work together. Except in reality, they'd hold grudges and ignore/sabotage calls for help. It was like watching them waft in each other's farts and pretending they didn't smell. I once had a coworker confront me before eventually yelling at me. I remember thinking, "I can't believe this is a tech company." They didn't apologize or acknowledge their actions when they were proven wrong. My team lead was much more knowledgeable about the tech and the project than the rest of the team, but he was dismissive towards outside ideas. He would often decline PR's or say "that won't work" without any justification as to why it wouldn't. He had the tendency to hijack and guard projects.

Pros

I've worked with them on and off over the years. - Diamond pays at market rate or above. - They work with startups and large enterprise - Usually don't work with outdated tools and processes - The partners actually do lead and are decent people who treat people well and are always trying to learn themselves plus be local community leaders. - Leadership are extremely technical and know their stuff - The teams they put together are generally competent, knowledgeable and are not usually jerks. - They actually observe holidays even for contractors. They're one of the better businesses I've had the pleasure of being involved with in my career. To respond to another contractor's dismay at being dropped when there's no work. Yeah, that's kind of what goes with the territory of being a contractor (and even full time these days). It's not personal, it's business and they take people on according to role and demand. With that said, they hustle hard for work to keep their teams employed.

Cons

- They are a dev shop, so if you're looking for a branding agency, this may not be the place for you. Or maybe it is. - Team members are often remote. Which can be good or bad depending on your perspective. They're trying to change this and have people come on site at least part of the time to build a more of a team "culture". They generally don't force people to do this though and some can't of course, if they're across the country or the world. - There aren't tons of perks like massage, ping pong, etc.. Seriously though, if you need these, I don't know what to say... Competency and good leadership are more important in my opinion.
