Interesting job but disconnect between office and floor - Sailmaker Doyle Sails Employee Review

Pros

Learned many skills, opportunities for overtime in the busy season, good coworkers

Cons

Real disconnect between the office and the floor. Deadlines would be pushed up because a salesman would promise customers unreasonable things. Pay didn't match what a skilled tradesperson would expect...and because many of the staff were young, they could be paid less. Raises were often promised and never delivered. No real opportunity for advancement. The office culture was very cliquey. Favoritism was rampant.

Pros

Doyle's constant traffic of captains and sailors gives employees plenty of opportunities to network in the sailing industry.

Cons

The communication between coworkers has a history of being unprofessional and abusive. As a sailmaker, there is little room to move up within the company's ranks. There is little variability in work tasks, causing a lot of repetition in work.
