Pros

Paycheck every two weeks (albeit small), management experience

Cons

This company will hire anything with a pulse. Turnover is very high which is why it is very easy to get a job here. They brag about being a billion dollar company and they only promote from within and if you work hard its easy to advance. They are a billion dollar company but only because they step on their employees in terms of pay so they can pad their pockets and their stock holders' pockets. Housekeeping staff starts at minimum wage and stays there unless a union negotiates something different or minimum wage increases. They are treated like dirt but expected to be the hardest working people ever. If they have housekeepers that are making more than minimum wage they try to save money in buildings by giving those housekeepers less hours or finding a reason to fire them. I was at my building for three years and my payroll budget was actually decreased even though minimum wage had gone up twice and the staff got two raises per the union contract. So instead of increasing payroll to cover that, I couldnt cover all the shifts with my staff because I would be over budget (which is a cardinal sin) so I had to start working permanent shifts of housekeeping and laundry as well as continue to do my management responsibilities. Supply budgets are barely enough to cover what you need even though you are expected to have enough supplies at all times. Housekeepers are not given enough time to complete their routine according to company guidelines but more time on their shift means more cost for the company so instead they just want the employees written up. My staff had about ten minutes to clean each room, the disinfectant we used had a contact time of ten minutes to be effective. Makes sense right? There is no HR department for the buildings so the manager is in charge of interveiwing, hiring, training any new employee which becomes tough if you have a sudden/unplanned opening. In that situation you will most likely have to cover the open shifts yourself and try to find time to bring in a new person and because of the terrible wages you don't really get the cream of the crop applying for a job. If you have enough staff to cover the open shifts great, but my experience was the only ones volunteering were the ones that were already working full time so picking up extra days would have put them into overtime (which is cardinal sin #2). Since the manager is on salary you are expected to work at least 50 hours per week sometimes more. I was frequently asked to help out with night projects at other buildings with no gas money or anything and expected to be at my building the next morning. There are no perks at all with this job. No Christmas bonus, no recognition for having no citations on a state survey, no congratulations for anything. Benefits are so expensive and are still terrible they might as well be non existent. At all the district and regional meeting I attended everyone always bragged about what a good company this was and what an opportunity it is to work for them, but nobody could ever give me a reason why. Majortiy of the reviews about this company you will read all say the same thing so apparently there is some truth in what I'm saying. Long story short I would only recomment getting a job with this company if you are planning on filling a gap so you can get a paycheck while you look for a better job and you just want to be able to put staff/budget management experience on your resume. If you are looking at this job as long term then RUN in the other direction.

Pros

A Properly Managed Account with good Upper Management support can reward an Account Manager with 5 day work weeks and weekends off. The Mission Statement, which could be distilled down to Do your utmost to serve your Clients, Residents and Employees and Make this world a better place, resonates with me. I've read a lot of negative reviews basically saying HCSG Upper Management overburdens Lower Management and Hourly Employees withdemands that are impossible to meet. But I have not experienced this. Far from it. Thus far, everyone in my own upper management line has demonstrated the opposite, they are all eager to prioritize "rescue missions" to ease the pain of managers who are short staffed for example, by jumping in to help their Account Managers Personally. I would say, if dumping excessive work or educational demands on Lower Level Managers and Employees is or was a real issue at HCSG and explosive attrition was ever a problem as a result - my upper management Team is PROACTIVELY Demonstrating the RIGHT way to fix and run things and I applaud their effforts whole heartedly.

Cons

Any Manager whose focus has always been on Problem Solving / Trouble shooting will always have much to say when it comes to making things work the way they should in a not so perfect world. To share everything I am personally involved in fixing and everything I intend to fix would potentially give the wrong impression of this company as a whole. Every Location, has a different story to tell with it's own inherent issues, and I have not been with HCSG long enough to comment on Nationwide Management patterns. I assume any Management Deficiencies in the past that may have resulted in High job dissatisfaction and turnover rates have been addressed and Employee Corrective Actions have been applied to the mid and upper Management team just like they would be and are to lower management and hourly employees. That is my assumption. And if it turns out that upper management is detatched and non sympathetic with the real life issues caused by overburdening lower level employees with impossible demands, I would cite that as a Ginormous "Con" with intense heat and passion because that would be a persistent pattern that contradicts the often stated Corporate Mission with blatant hypocrisy.
