Pros

1. Most coworkers are smart, dedicated in ed-tech. You'll be around with a lot of nice people. 2. Good work life balance and benefits. 3. Young and energetic team, lots of new grads from top schools.

Cons

1. Decisions are extremely top-down. Not only business direction, but also product features and details have to be approved by COO and CEO, product managers sometimes have little power upon decisions. 2. Below average compensation. 3. Unclear career ladder and promotion. 4. As others have mentioned, it's not a stable environment. Business decisions lead to frequent team re-organization and lay-off since mid 2018, people leaving all the time. Very high retention rate. Sales VP departed, COO commented in the email -- "get away with any obstacle and inefficiency toward our goal". (The goal is to reach 1 in 2 students in US by 2025, while it's 1 in 8 in 2019)

IXL Learning Response
6y
We strive to hire employees who are excited about IXL's mission to improve learning through the best educational technology possible, which really comes through the universal feedback about how great our people are! We are investing in a few areas this year that address some of your feedback, including management development to provide our managers (many who have been promoted at IXL as first-time people managers) with skills and tools to facilitate employee growth discussions and activities. Leadership is also actively reviewing compensation across the company to ensure IXL's pay is competitive. Some departments have already seen the results of market-driven compensation changes over the last pay cycle. Thanks for your feedback--we've heard what you and others have said and are working to put it into practice!

Pros

- Depending on the team, you can have a good work/life balance - Given they hire a lot of new grads who are building a community in the area, it's pretty easy to get involved in social groups and make friends in the office

Cons

- Depending on the team, you may have poor work/life balance - Top-down culture - many typical responsibilities a given role would have (at least in engineering or product) in other companies are separated out. While not necessarily good or bad, it can catch people who are used to more autonomy in their decisions off-guard - Slow growth trajectory in roles and experience / learning which can be unfortunate for those starting off in their careers - Immature feedback / leveling loop - It was fairly common that people got feedback or temperature checks from more casual conversations with peers or other teams rather than formal reviews or manager conversations
