Pros
You get good exposure to the industry. As other reviewers have mentioned, it's a good place to build your CV for a while. The pay is OK. Colleagues are all generally nice people and easy to work with. By and large it's pleasant enough and you can get by until a more solid career move comes along.
Cons
Due to the nature of the business your job is never really that secure. Innovatia get contracts with companies to outsource their documentation projects. Some companies hire Innovatia because they are too small to afford a full-time, in-house doc team. In some cases the smaller companies just have a short term requirement for a project. That said, Innovatia doesn't generate much revenue from smaller companies. Innovatia makes most of its revenue from large companies who give a contract to Innovatia so that they can save money by replacing their existing in-house doc team with a more affordable solution. These companies are focused on the bottom line. The result is an environment where writers are brought on when a project is in development and there is more need for documentation. When a project dies or the need for documentation is reduced, the writers are let go or reshuffled to a project where they are needed. It is an unstable, unpredictable environment where you are an expendable resource. Other cons are with Innovatia itself. It is a small company based in a small town in a somewhat remote part of Canada. A lot of the employees in HR, finance, and management in the company headquarters have that laid back, small town attitude and can be very informal and slower to respond. That doesn't work for everyone. The folks in Canada often forget or just don't seem to take notice of team members working in other parts of the world. Obviously that's not a great quality. Innovatia is basically a body shop for documentation. When they have the work, they employ more people. When the work isn't available, or when the client requires it, they layoff employees. It is not a place where you are going to work with highly talented peers. In a lot of cases, the barrier to entry for Innovatia writers is pretty low. There is a pretty steady churn of people coming and going so they sometimes just hire people with any old writing experience to do the job and fill the position to meet client demands.
