Pros

MGT Consulting is a growing firm that is committed to the public sector but also explores related opportunities in other areas. The glue that holds everything together is a commitment to driving change and impacting communities. The firm is open to exploring new markets, has dedicated experts in its areas of focus, and is activity championing diversity and inclusion. Its focus on a diverse workforce is not lip service. MGT finds individuals who are committed to serving the public sector and really good, hardworking people. There is also more collaboration that one might typically find at consulting firms and active discussion about work/life balance and risk/reward. There is a lot of opportunity.

Cons

Though MGT has been around since the 1970s it has gone through a lot of evolution/change. Some of the internal infrastructure needs improving to ensure that the firm can sustain and support growth. Much gets passed to consulting staff because there may not be corporate staff to fulfill a need which can result in divergent practices. The firm is also working at training up newer staff and providing opportunities to more junior staff - the intent and desire is there but it does require some change in practices. And, most of the workforce is remote, so like other firms with remote staff there needs to be extra effort put in to sustain company culture and not create separate cultures between office based and remote staff. COVID-19 has obviously made this task harder.

Pros

The management team for the proposal department are lovely people and supportive. As a freelancer you are paid an hourly rate, and there is no micromanagement. Great work/life balance because you get to set your own hours.

Cons

The company is expanding rapidly through acquisition and losing some of that wholesomeness it had when I first joined. There also is no path for growth. You also don't have that much control over how much work you get assigned and there is hardly ever enough work to work a full week, it's better for part-time work.

Pros

Remote work place but turnover is high

Cons

One of the worst places to look for a long-term career. Senior management will tell you what you want to hear about career growth, promotions, teamwork, and supporting employees, but don’t expect their actions to match their words. Employees are valued only as long as they are useful, and once they are not, they can be quickly replaced or let go. The company constantly promotes how much it cares about its people, but my experience showed the exact opposite. The culture and values advertised by leadership did not align with reality.
