Pros

Working from home for the state is great. Contrary to what people often believe, however, you do need to actually do work - you can't just screw around. It's a very busy job and you will be getting lots of work, because you are often understaffed. The actual job itself is likely to combine program development with actual data work; you will have to work with and help to improve information systems and make appropriate choices for your team, as you are the expert and many members likely know little about the advanced functionality of office programs and various information systems. You will be both a form of pseudo-tech support as well as designing things to help your colleagues. The work is rewarding, as you are helping people, and your coworkers are generally good people, as you are fundamentally a bunch of do gooders. It is a positive workplace environment.

Cons

Constant understaffing is a problem. Sometimes the heads of agencies are more concerned with politics than actually solving problems - it's not that they don't want to help people, it's that they are far too concerned about optics, politics, and "equity" rather than helping people. They at times will want to work with outside groups or companies who are not state employees; some of these are great, but some of them are basically their contacts and are not the best, and vendors are constantly trying to sell the state "solutions" that sometimes cause more problems than they solve. Some management may engage in racial discrimination.
