Pros

Wonderful cause. Character building

Cons

I have never written a review on Glassdoor before but have felt compelled to share my experience of the RSPCA. I came to the RSPCA hoping to find a creative, intelligent environment full of people passionate about the cause and striving for animal welfare. Instead, I found myself surrounded by jaded team members, who were incredibly unhappy, disengaged and uninspired, as well as management who seemed only interested in hitting targets in the easiest and fastest way possible, without any thought or care for their teams. The turnover of staff is like nothing I have ever experienced before, instead of fixing the problem the management plug the holes with contractors who now make up almost half of the Fundraising Department. HQ is rife with people who have worked here for years who appear completely uninterested in the cause or changing the current environment. Those who do appear to care seem to be desperately trying to leave or have given up, which is desperately sad. If you are looking to work in the charity sector or are passionate about animal welfare, I strongly advise that you do not apply or accept a role at the RSPCA, as you will be sorely disappointed.

Pros

I had a great supervisor, Sally, who ran a tight ship but was also a friendly and helpful mentor and didn't get angry when I made mistakes as I was starting out. I got some experience stocking the shelves, interacting with a variety of customers, and learning the value of merchandise. There's also some opportunities to get cool books, etc. for low prices, especially if no one else wants them.

Cons

I worked as a volunteer, since it's a charity shop, so obviously I didn't get paid. In addition, customers will sometimes have strong body odor, and like any customer service job, you just have to grin and bear it.
