The worst place I have ever worked. (HQ - Fundraising)

Pros

Wonderful cause. Character building

Cons

I have never written a review on Glassdoor before but have felt compelled to share my experience of the RSPCA. I came to the RSPCA hoping to find a creative, intelligent environment full of people passionate about the cause and striving for animal welfare. Instead, I found myself surrounded by jaded team members, who were incredibly unhappy, disengaged and uninspired, as well as management who seemed only interested in hitting targets in the easiest and fastest way possible, without any thought or care for their teams. The turnover of staff is like nothing I have ever experienced before, instead of fixing the problem the management plug the holes with contractors who now make up almost half of the Fundraising Department. HQ is rife with people who have worked here for years who appear completely uninterested in the cause or changing the current environment. Those who do appear to care seem to be desperately trying to leave or have given up, which is desperately sad. If you are looking to work in the charity sector or are passionate about animal welfare, I strongly advise that you do not apply or accept a role at the RSPCA, as you will be sorely disappointed.

Pros

Lovely, committed fellow employees who are passionate about animal welfare

Cons

Awful corporate culture, as a direct result of having far too many Board Trustees with little or no business experience, who are there because of some 'dark ages' recruitment processes which result in the great and the good of the animal welfare world getting appointed forever, each with their own personal animal welfare agenda and none with the sense to realise that the RSPCA mission is delivered by the staff, not by the animals they are trying to help. As a result, it's like a mini public sector organisation, with no stability (3 CEO's in the last 5 years), corrupt Board behaviours (the chair using Society funds to finance her daughter's animal welfare centre!) and the staff voice being suppressed at every opportunity. There's absolutely zero focus on staff development (unless you work in front-line services), so unless you really want to become an RSPCA Inspector, my advice as a former employee is to avoid this employment experience like the plague.
