Pros
* There is generally a lot to learn, no matter which team you are in. A lot of cross-collaboration happens between different teams, so you’ll get exposed to different ways of working, different sets of knowledge very quickly in Viki. * You are given a lot of ownership and responsibilities, even as a relatively junior person in the company. * Healthcare benefits are some of the best in Singapore. For example, dental & specialist visits are almost fully covered, yearly health checkups, and vision care benefits. * Education benefits of $1k USD per year. * Free lunches provided, but food quality has dropped significantly over the years.
Cons
* It’s a growing company that aspires to be like one of the tech giants, but lacks a lot of processes and standardization - a common problem for growing companies. * You have to be extroverted and loud to succeed or get noticed (and subsequently promoted). Doing good work behind the scenes doesn’t get rewarded, so most people optimize for doing “flashy” work that impresses management. * A extremely lean team, meaning people are usually expected to stretch themselves but progression paths are usually not clear. * Middle management has become very political as of late. Engineering managers do not respect the product function and tries to override product decisions at every chance. * C-suite is not visionary. There isn’t anything planned to grow the Viki outside of ‘providing Asian entertainment’. In short, they look to just do more of the same, so all tech innovation work is deprioritized. * COO doesn’t oversee operations (on the tech side) at all. He is out of touch on product operations, and how product collaborates with other departments in the company.
