Lots of Hype, not a place to work - FEC- Field Energy Consultant SolarCity Employee Review

Pros

Great product and high moral at corporate level. Good benefits for those who end up staying for any length of time.

Cons

High turn over. I was there for little over a year. By the time I left I was the most senior person on the sales team. They seem to hire lots of reps and then get rid of the ones they don't like. Kind of the throw mud against the wall and see what sticks philosophy. Not a lot of support or loyalty to employees. They want "one visit closes" meaning you need to get a signed contract at the first meeting with a prospect. They are looking for a high pressure, manipulator, used car salesman type of sales rep. During my 13 months at SC our compensation package changed 3 times. Each time was a sort of repackaging of salary and commissions, and after taking out all the hype, each time resulted in less pay. When I started I was informed that half of my appointments would be set for me and I would get the other half from working in Home Depot. What I found was that appointments were given out under a system of favoritism that SC encourages. In the end there were no appointments being given to me and as the Home Depot market is being exhausted fewer appointments are available there. Their answer was door to door cold calling.

Pros

Just to quantify my review a bit, I am within the top 10% of inside sales reps within our 12,000 person company. It is a great place to work and people doing well ARE able to make good money here. The executive team ALWAYS has a platform for reps to help make SolarCity a better place every quarter. They involve the top 20 reps each quarter in various ways to help their peers through an interactive group called Team Elite. Executives, VP's, Directors, and Managers are always willing to help and go to bat when there are issues with things that need to be fixed. The direction of the company is consistent and although the company is large, decision makers work as hard as possible to steer the big ship quickly when necessary.

Cons

Knee jerk reactions with decision making at a director level create issues from time to time. Culture has had its ups and downs due to HUGE growth last year and subsequent high attrition rates.
