A Job Not a Career - Software Engineer VIZIO Employee Review

Pros

Good salary and stock based compensation. Lower to mid level management is solid, but often has to shield engineers from out-of-touch upper management. Engineers are given a large amount of trust, time, and latitude to come up with solutions.

Cons

There is no concrete agile SDLC process, expectations, or even job descriptions. Coupled with performance reviews being separate from promotions, this leads to a situation where engineers do not get promoted unless they bring a competing offer. Forget about career growth here. There are no priorities, just executive whims that dominate the immediate focus of the entire company. Product management is lacking, inexperienced, and isolated behind management. Project management doesn't have much to contribute at that point. HR is constantly updating policies to be more restrictive. Get any promises or assurances in writing, or they might not happen (depending on political capital). Need to practice politics and silly games to advance here.

Pros

People are friendly and easy to work with. Most people are team players. Work life balance does exist for some roles.

Cons

Management is easily threatened by people who ask questions or make suggestions for improvement. Gate keeping info, people, and development opportunities is common. Due to Vizio/Walmart promotion policies, there is no upward mobility. Senior Management has told employees if they want to move up, they need to go elsewhere. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who have limited experience running the place and it shows on both a business decision and leadership level.
