Pros

It is a strong company with an important product that is growing despite a downturned economy. The benefits have been great including $8,000 in tuition assistance. The health care benefits are decent also. The company is very focused on being the best in the industry and rightly avoids union involvement in the company. This is the best thing for both the company and the employees based on results at the competitor AT&T. The company is great for anyone interested in a career and upward mobility, especially if you are young and willing to work hard for it. If you enjoy technology and a strong culture in your employment, Verizon Wireless is a great company.

Cons

Verizon Wireless has over 70,000 employees and many of these employees are young and ambitious. While there are a lot of opportunities to move up in the company, there is naturally a lot of competition. However, some positions are easier to do this than others. Due to a shift towards employee focus and avoiding unionization, human resources have become very lax and have created an almost government or union feel in certain areas that seem to encourage a lack of work. In these areas it is easy to shine and since advancement is not based on experience, everyone has an equal opportunity.

Pros

Compensation is competitive but you will work very hard for it. Culture is excellent and exhibited and practiced from the top down. Benefits are excellent and cost reasonable. 401k match and profit sharing. Lots of training and professional development opportunities. Can advance if you're willing to relocate.

Cons

Company is trying to transform into what it wants to be beyond a wireless carrier (cloud?, security?, telematics?, wholesaler?, etc) and is struggling with a vision, resources, and org structure to make it a reality. Several re-organizations over last few years so job security has frequently been a question. Often delayed response to competitors caused by management's concern that acting would result in not meeting Wall Street expectations. Not the "happiest" place to work because no result is ever good enough and successes aren't celebrated because the focus is always on the next weekly/monthly/quarterly goal.
