My mental health was at an all time low working here - General Staff Member WHDH Employee Review

Pros

There’s some amazing people who work there and get treated like absolute trash. You’ll met some of your very best friends, most of the people there are super supportive. The people there are great but the work environment isn’t.

Cons

Management doesn’t care about their employees. They will run you down to the ground because they’re short staffed and even when you say no to pick up an extra shift they’ll make you feel guilty, and the comp day you get for it - you won’t even be able to take it because it’ll get denied. They make promises that don’t ever come to fruition, and will gaslight you time and time and again - and the pay is so little there for the amount of work you’re expected to do and when you don’t perform to their expectations they’re surprised.

Pros

Top 10 market, and well-known station that will help advance your broadcast career.

Cons

-If you take a job at WHDH, you are not entering a newsroom. You are entering a sweatshop run by toxic, micro-managing leaders who are fundamentally incapable and unwilling to treat their employees with even a modicum of respect.
-Management is not open to any story ideas unless they involve surveillance video. You will not be enterprising or have any ownership of your reporting. You will be assigned whatever the producers decide will make for the flashiest and catchiest promo. The news coverage and editorial decisions are beyond cringeworthy. A pop-up picture book contains more substance than WHDH’s newscasts and reports. And there’s enough cheesy alliteration to make Dr. Seuss throw up. -Get ready for erratic hours and schedules. You will be regularly asked (but first they will try and tell you) to come in early and stay late - all without compensation. Work 13.5 hours a day and think you will be rewarded for helping out? Guess again. The News Director will deny your comp-day because 14 hours is the minimum. There are absolutely no exceptions or considerations for your time.

-The News Director will try to justify her selfish demands by saying ‘that’s the industry’ or that’s the “7News Way.” The news industry is by nature very difficult with odd hours and a demanding workload. That is why now, more than ever, stations should be treating their employees with respect. The big market and the city may entice you but tread -very- carefully. There are newsrooms out there that will least treat you like a human being. WHDH never will.
