Pros
The location is nice, the hours are flexible (this may be a con for those who desire more traditional 9-5 hours), there are a lot of helpful staff (outside of upper-management), the pay is higher than other local cultural institutions (like The Walters, BMA & MD Historical Society). The patrons are pretty cool most days (I like the challenge of dealing with different people every day).
Cons
There are far too many members of upper management acting in unethical (and possibly illegal) ways. There are too many fellow employees discovering issues: -in their pay -w/ over-time availability (some staff are penalized for working over-time or denied over-time while others are allowed to work or claim to work nearly double over-time -promotions are often arbitrary. -many of the 2nd-tier managers neglect to train their new staff (a common theme within the main Library is that staff learn by doing because their supervisor won't or can't teach them). -there are no regular performance evaluations and discriminatory/toxic behaviors are now rooted within the organization -lower paid paraprofessional staff are made to complete the work of other positions w/o being paid out-of-title pay -If the institution owes you money and you never notice they will never bring it to your attention, so pay attention to your pay stubs! -HR often feels useless (the staff doing work in the department may very well be overburdened with work the slackers neglect-while those same slackers collect overtime) -there is a cemented belief that upper-management does not care about our well-being (we were told about lead in the pipes during the beginning of the renovation-after many of us and the patrons had been exposed for who knows how long!-When asked about lead levels and when they were discovered upper management told us they would check w/ their attorney to verify if they legally had to give us that info, instead of being transparent w/ their staff). -I could go on and on
