Great cause, problematic environment and management

Pros

Who doesn’t want to try to end homelessness and poverty?

Cons

Terrible founder and CEO who poisoned the environment with her mercurial micromanaging and playing employees off each other. Have you ever been asked to rat out your coworkers at your annual review and then be told all the negative things they said about you by your boss? Very unpleasant. They also expect a workaholic culture (60+ hours is expected during the busy grant period). Note how high the turnover is and the fact that the only substantive staff who’ve been there longer than ~3 years work remotely. They also underpay new staff.

Pros

- Great mission - addressing homelessness - Some dedicated and thoughtful coworkers - Exposure to interesting clients and issues

Cons

- Toxic work environment - extremely difficult executive director keeps staff in constant fear and distrust - she actually encourages staff to snitch on each other during performance reviews - Upper management expects staff to work over 60 hours/week during busy projects, with no regard for personal lives - Low compensation, roughly $50,000, and executive director discourages salary negotiation - High turnover - only a handful of non-management/administrative staff had been there more than 2 years when I started - Some incompetent colleagues make work more difficult after hiring sprees due to high turnover

Pros

Really great snacks in the office

Cons

All of the bad parts of a corporation with none of the good parts of a nonprofit. The work is close to meaningless but it has a law firm vibe. Free cheese it’s do not make up for being treated very poorly. They hire from govt and corporate worlds so no one knows the benefits are actually very bad compared to other non profits. Highly dysfunctional. Please don’t work here
