Pros

An organization doing great work for its community.

Cons

Management, Management, Management. Micromanaging and unreasonable expectations. Aggression, frustration, and little to no care for employee well-being. I left because I could not take it anymore and was not (and will not be) the only one.

Toxic workplace

Pros

While the ED is incredibly toxic to work with, there is a community amongst other employees who work there(think trauma bond).

Cons

The Executive Director is a textbook narcissist. Executive Director is extremely condescending and takes a ‘my way or the highway’ approach to the organization. Extreme micromanagement. Does not trust the competency of the employees she hired who are experts in their fields when she herself is not classically trained in anything environmentally related but will insist she’s an expert and knows better since she has ‘done all your jobs’ before. The Executive Director is extremely unprofessional so expect her to cry multiple times a week. She will argue with her husband on the phone or discuss her children’s medical or mental health business loudly and often for all to hear. She will complain if your lunch has a smell that is off putting to her. She is extremely passive aggressive regarding work and personal matters. Over 10 young females had quit in a one year period because of treatment from ED. Employees have brought up concerns to ED and board with no accountability. Board President explicitly discourages wage transparency citing ‘it’s not healthy for a small organization.’ Employee well-being and work life balance not prioritized. You can say yes to 5 weekend or weeknight events but the one time you say no you will be guilt tripped and pressured multiple times to attend. ED discourages employees from eating lunch together and pushes a ‘working lunch.’ Has stated the expectation is a 45 hour work week even though contracts are for 40 hours. ED tends to make a lot of enemies in the community they are servicing including the post office and surrounding local businesses so there is not a great reputation of the organization. Only one employee has worked there longer than one year. Average tenure of an employee while I worked there was about 3-6 months. At least 3 employees that I am aware of had to seek mental health treatment after working in the toxic environment. You will likely witness the poor treatment of other employees.
