Good place to work in theory- less so in practice.

Pros

A mission to feel passionate about.

Cons

It is not uncommon in the nonprofit world to have an undercurrent of a divide between “program” staff and administrative staff including the fundraising team. The division between these two groups at SFCN is palpable to the point where the unhealthy culture is distracting, and therefore a drain on productivity. Employees remark that the culture at SFCN feels more like a middle school cafeteria.

Not what it seems

Pros

It's very close to the metro north

Cons

"Great mission tough culture" review hit it on the head - there is 0 leadership or mentorship, even from the friendly, but woefully overwhelmed new CEO. It is truly remarkable how little guidance this group of experienced non-profiters give the people that they are managing. On top of this, it seems that the true talent lies in the skill sets of the junior employees. There is no transparency, or any kind of a sense of what anyone else is working on and how that is connected to your work. Unless you work on a team that works directly with the camps, you're likely to forget why you are there in the first place. Also stated in the previous review, the culture is severely lacking. Birthday parties with sweets don't translate into camaraderie, and frankly, when coupled with the secrecy, play like subterfuge. Do yourself a favor, don't let the above-average salary and benefits package fool you, move on.

Great mission - tough culture

Pros

Great mission! A good group of people in most positions. New CEO that is very mission-driven.

Cons

The culture is lacking. Overall, no transparency in leadership. New employees will show up to work with no announcement to rest of staff. Management has changed job descriptions of current employees with no input from the employee and with a sense of urgency (pushing employees out). HR and directors will "sneak" new rules, policies, or less benefits into the employee manual and rush employees to sign. Very bureaucratic, political, and sneaky. On most teams there is a 1:1 or 1:2 manager:employee ratio, which results in a lot of managing (and sometimes micro-managing) with very little leadership/mentorship. Most employees have very little autonomy or decision-making power. High turnover - the organization has lost the majority of staff over the past 1-2 years.
