Pros
Cool work environment, will miss it
Cons
Sad the store had to close down
Pros
It was easy to work your hours around your schedule. You meet a lot of other photographers and being with co-workers in a smaller space was a lot of fun. It's also nice to have the balance of behind the counter sales and technician stuff in the back.
Cons
Pay was way too little. This is a small local store where you figure the environment will be a lot more open, especially between management and staff but unfortunately it is not. Management would routinely fire decent workers for no discernible reason or be needlessly critical. If you're a few minute late, you will get chastised for it. If you want to try something new, that won't happen. Management just sticks to what you know/have been trained in and doesn't really allow you to explore anything else.
Pros
I found that working with the customers was extremely rewarding because people that are truly concerned with their photos tend be generally all around good people. Don't get me wrong, it goes the other way, too, but the great customers that were regulars made it worth it. Being able to print your own work, closely control the process, and have access to all the equipment was probably one of the biggest perks. The staff was great and friendly, you would usually show up at work on your days off just to say hi.
Cons
Management at Techlab was difficult. The attitude was unprofessional and praise was hard to come by. There were many times where an employee would go above and beyond only to be unrecognized. Some people were fired for no real reason. There was generally no respect for employees. Trust was an issue, as well. A lot of the time it felt as if you were being watched and scrutinized even though you would do nothing to provoke this. Insurance was available, but mostly unaffordable on our hourly pay. There were also a lot of empty promises made regarding raises.
