Thriving hierarchical, exploitative culture

Pros

One or two department head gems that are willing to mentor and gracefully lead their associates. Comparable clothing allowance. Great Soho location. Little interference between departments. Typically recruits all-star, pedigreed interns you'll only find through word of mouth.

Cons

Hierarchical structure: boot licking is a requisite here. Overbearing/inappropriate way that the showroom is managed. Cold managerial approach to associates that haven't been there for 10+ years. Extremely cheap internally: no delivered lunches, barely any office supplies at the ready. Pin quiet (chatting between colleagues is an obvious don't). Morale has hit an all-time low after implementation of a new division head: turnover is happening when it shouldn't/company is losing its gems. Interns are treated poorly and remain unpaid 40hr/week laborers.

Dysfunctional Family Atmosphere

Pros

Everyone in the office was friendly, sweet, there are a lot of birthday celebrations. Generous clothing allowance (depending on your department/position). Generally a relaxed place to work. Office was very spread out with a big kitchen and reception area.

Cons

The HR was Amy (the owner)'s sister. You would think you are speaking with HR in confidence, but she would either just forward communication to Amy, or openly discuss without asking first for your go ahead... it felt very much a violation and conflict of interest. The entire office felt very young with big age gaps. Most corporate employees were in their early 20's and it was extremely cliquey. High turnover rate as well, almost 10 employees left for other roles while I was there. The 'we operate like a family' phrase really means it is dysfunctional, and upper management will yell at you, scold you in public, and then apologize to you later. It all felt very toxic and manipulative. Very emotional workplace. Lack of communication resulted in a tense environment and departments would place blame on each other for things falling through the cracks. Amy oversees everything in every department and it hinders creativity and growth and innovation.
