Pros

- Friendly coworkers (not management) - Work with fun IPs such as Lego and Star Wars - Some talented engineers around you to learn from

Cons

This place frequently demands extreme overtime. The kind where you are staying until 3am for a week or more sometimes. When it isn't extreme overtime, it's just regular unpleasant overtime, working until 9pm. When I was there, there was no attempt to compensate for this overtime. They might tell you to take the day off after a launch, but that is not proportional to working until the morning hours for days on end. It's essentially wage theft. They continually say that they're working on it, but that isn't possible. They're entire business model is based off this exploitation. The contract industry is very competitive, so they make deals with companies saying they can do projects very quickly and for cheap to undercut other contract companies. To make up for their unrealistic budgets and timelines, they underpay staff and overwork them. During an All Hands meeting, management asked for feedback to improve the company, and almost everyone answered they wanted less crunch. Instead of listening to these grievances they said it wasn't useful feedback because they already know about the problem. They get upset when you point it out, but won't do anything to change it. On top of that, folks in management positions are unfriendly in general around the office.

I’m very sorry to hear that this employee had such a negative experience at Trigger. Given the low turnover we’ve had over the past couple years, as well as changes to our overtime pay policies, it seems likely that they worked with us some time ago. In response to employee feedback, over the past 2-3 years we’ve taken great strides to significantly reduce crunch, and when overtime does happen (an occasional reality in the agency world) we now offer paid overtime to our developers. As a former Project Manager at Trigger I’m no stranger to our past struggles with OT, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done to make real change in this area!

Career Dead End

Pros

- Good people (normal employees - not management) that work hard and are pretty skilled - Occasionally get to work with top clients - Occasional company outings to watch movies or eat lunch - 100% Health Coverage - Free Parking - Free Snacks - Catered Lunch on Fridays

Cons

- Unqualified Leadership: not much experience outside of Trigger, lack of vision, poor communication, poor attitude, disrespectful, blame employees when things don't work out. - Hire by misleading candidates. You will not be doing the job they promise you will be doing. - Trigger survives by hiring naive college kids that can be overworked and underpaid with little resistance - No career advancement : career ladder is non-existent here. The studio is run by a small group of guys that have been there forever and the rest of the organization is flat. There's nowhere to go with your career and the work you do there will not help you get your next job. One guy there has had the same title for over 3 years even though he was literally the only person in the department. - Hollow job titles: Job titles have no meaning here. They are just given out to give the illusion of structure to new applicants and visiting clients. Also so they can print business cards. Your real title is "art/programming/producer mule #x" - Most projects don't matter and offer only mundane work - low pay: Not horrible pay, but definitely below industry average by 10-15% - no equity & low bonuses (if any): CEO will constantly remind you to give your all for the company and expect overtime hours, but he will not share any of the company financial success with you. - Sweatshop culture: Be ready to work a lot of unpaid overtime hours. If you are a programmer, you will be there late almost every night. Heaven help you if you try to leave at a normal hour (7pm). Also, get used to receiving same day deadline requests at the end of the work day. - 10 days PTO that begins accruing monthly after 1 month probation period = good luck enjoying life with your family & friends.

We're sorry to hear that this person had such a bad experience. We can't be a fit for everyone. To reply to some of these comments, yes we are a flat organization, which many people like about our company. We have a history of promoting from within and give people a path to thrive. In fact we've had 4 people start at the coordinator level that were promoted to new positions, including 1 who is now a department leader over a staff of 5. These promotions happen throughout the organization, despite being a smaller company. Regarding PTO accrual, we have revised this policy as of Q1 2018 and PTO accrual now starts on employee's start date. The 10 days mentioned are just vacation days and do not account for sick days and other holidays that we observe, such as special considerations the week between Christmas and New Years Day. Those 10 days increase to 15 in 3 years. Regarding overtime, this is an area we are always striving to improve. We have actions we take to help alleviate and offset the overtime that this employee may not be aware of.

Long hours, low pay

Pros

The clients are the best part of this company. They fake a "caring" culture. They foster diversity and inclusion but do not actually care about people when they are in trouble or in need of assistance. People here are just another cog in the wheel.

Cons

LOW pay + Long/Late hours of working = The lowest wages in the industry. They fake that they are a progressive company who cares about their workers. They do not. When disaster struck my region, they set up a link to help people of my region, but did not offer once to help me, nor check on me and my family during the disaster. Leadership is a joke. Senior members of staff won't do their jobs unless hand held. Where is the senior leadership? Where is the professionalism. I got more "not my problem" type of responses when asking leadership to do simple tasks such as research products for the benefit of the company. You are going no where in this company. This company is being propped up to sell and the leadership are lying to their employees about partial ownership or equity if the company is sold. Guess what- you aren't getting anything but empty promises and tall tales. This company is going to do its best to limp along until they sell it and lay off all employees. Non-sustainable development practices.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Trigger won’t always be a fit for every hire and we regret the negative perception that this employee left with. In particular, we recognize the growing pains that came out of adjusting to a remote culture and have taken stock of ways to improve for employees in later time zones than our LA headquarters. When it comes to pay, our salaries do meet the market based on our size, industry, and employee experience and performance. Lastly, Trigger’s long-term business goals don't match what is described here, which likely stems from this employee’s short tenure of just a few months. Trigger is prioritizing the support and experience of our employees now more than ever, and look forward to continued growth and longevity as a direct result of our talented staff.
