Pros

Salary Decent pension scheme Not much else to highlight beyond the compensation package

Cons

When I joined, the work was exciting and surrounded by talented and passionate engineers. Unfortunately, over time, many of those strong team members left the company. The culture shifted with new management and tech leads, becoming increasingly toxic. Engineers are treated as replaceable, and non-technical stakeholders often blame the tech team without understanding the underlying problems. Inexperienced leadership sometimes deflects accountability by undermining or scapegoating senior engineers. Career growth is severely limited — there's little support for professional development, and advancement often feels politically driven rather than based on merit. Management seems more focused on internal power dynamics and ego than on building a healthy, high-performing engineering culture. If you care about your mental well-being and long-term career progression, approach with caution.

Pros

UnderwriteMe's benefits package is fairly good and the company offices in Tower Bridge House are a good working environment, if slightly difficult in terms of transport options. However, there is limited fixed desks thus making it harder to go in to the office to any meaningful dedicated work and therefore, I assume that UnderwriteMe will remain largely a flexible / remote-based company. I guess your outlook and personal circumstances determine whether that is a pro or a con.

Cons

Over the past year, UnderwriteMe has undertaken a new direction in terms of product strategy built on the opinions, experience and expertise of a very limited but specific group of people. The expertise, however, does not appear to be based on any deep-level understanding of the insurance industry or the existing UnderwriteMe products. As well as, or maybe because of, the above, there also appears to be a significant shift in the culture of UnderwriteMe which does not feel positive or inclusive to all employees. While this can be dismissed as being as a result of the recent large-scale redundancies, the common thread of other reviews on Glassdoor around the impact of this shift in product direction tells another story.

Thanks very much for taking the time to provide feedback. I am pleased to hear that you are satisfied with the company benefits that UMe offer their employees. We do believe that our Tower Bride office is a great place to work, and we will continue to see how the space can be utilised to ensure teams are able to meet in person when needed. I am disappointed to hear that you do not feel that the culture of UMe is not inclusive. In order to ensure we are developing the right products for our environment; we have had to make difficult decisions that have resulted in some people leaving the business due to redundancy. Whilst we accept that some of the changes have been difficult, The Leadership Team believe that these well thought through changes will ensure we are a successful business. We regularly ask for feedback from our employees through different channels, in order to see how people are feeling, what we do well and what concerns them. Our goal is to ensure we have happy and engaged colleagues. Many thanks for your feedback! Nana – AVP, People

Pros

Very flexible workplace. Excellent care of staff, examples; additional paid company days off, had good home working support over COVID (including financial), regular work time set aside for personal development, remote working. Technology on new products keeps to latest LTS, the few legacy products/tools are being migrated to new platforms. There is a very active tech leadership focused upon improvement both product and personal.

Cons

Pay falling slightly given the recent high inflation in the UK zone.

Hi it's Xander from the current leadership team. Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review. Our Wellness Days where everyone gets additional days of holiday, spaced out throughout the year where everyone stops working to take care of themselves are a core part of our wellness offer and it's wonderful to hear they are appreciated. Personal Development is another topic that is close to the leadership's hearts so we are pleased to see many of the teams adopting regular slots for them to undertake learning activities that will help them grow. We hear you on the need to ensure that we continue our benchmarking and reward reviews to ensure that we are keeping in step with the market and benchmarking activities are planned for early next year. Coupled with this, our new high performance initiatives will see high performers rewarded for their outstanding contributions.
