Tragic waste of a good company

Pros

Great people (in the UK) Good location and office Free fruit

Cons

A classic example of a successful, functioning company being purchased and put on the path to destruction by the new owners, who completely fail to understand it (and make no effort to do so) - especially in the area of technology. Sales targets are now all that matters, together with an irrational desire to combine products with those in the US (also purchased) that really don't sit together well. Since all senior managers report to staff in the US (and increasingly responsibilities are being shipped over there, impacting morale), many significant UK issues never get addressed, and the top-level management structure comes across as a 'dysfunctional family'. The general belief is that the end game is for the US company to take over the intellectual property and customers, and let the UK office wither.

Not a positive experience

Pros

Mostly the people are great, there is a lot of flexibility around working hours and working from home. there isn't much bureaucracy and the dress code is casual.

Cons

The UL takeover hasn't improved things and the business still doesn't seem to have direction. 18 people have left the company since the start of 2016, which is huge turnover from around 150 staff. Development has moved to using an Agile methodology which the developers like but which is a disaster for the rest of the business. There aren't enough people to complete projects that have been committed to leading to incredible pressure on project managers and other people whose job it is to see that work is completed. Salary progression is poor once you are in with little job progression.

First of all I appreciate the thoughtful response, and I'm sorry that you feel the balance isn't right. There's definitely a great deal of pressure on the delivery side of the business. This has been acknowledged and we're working on it. Acquisitions are tricky. On the one-hand UL have been very conscious that we don't want to wade in and try to make big changes without properly understanding the dynamics involved; on the other, the business has grown quickly and continuous and rapid change comes with the territory. Systematizing some of the Agile development processes was relatively quick because the essentials were already in place. We still think Agile is the right way to go, as it reflects the fact that customer and business priorities change, whilst making the developers more efficient. The additional project owner and project architect roles in these teams has made this part of the business more scalable, and things like the stakeholder meetings every two months allow people from all sides of the business to help set priorities in a transparent and open way. The delivery part of the business (where a lot of the current pressure is felt) is about to go through a significant structural change too. This has taken longer to put in place than we wanted but is a big change and we wanted to consult with the people who are most impacted. This is being accompanied by a change in tooling to help support the project management process. We definitely appreciate feedback and are listening hard – please bear with us as we go into the next 6 months together.

A great place to work

Pros

Nice spacious offices, respectful, friendly management, free Coke / Tea / Coffee, always cakes and goodies in the kitchen, chill out room with tv's and foosball table, Social Committee, Summer Party, Christmas Party, Corporate Punt, etc all paid for by the company. lots of social opportunities; Badminton, Football, Cycling, Tennis, Go Ape, Paintballing. and so on and they seem to have an emphasis on recruiting "Nice" people, so the office atmosphere is calm and friendly.

Cons

The rate of change in the company can be difficult for some and the lack of consistency can on occasion cause confusion. Car Parking is bordering problematic with the rapid increase in numbers of staff. Internal communication could be better.
