I have been working at hmv full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Staff discount
    Product knowledge
    Over-time opportunities
Promising agency workers get kept and taken on as full time within a reasonably short period of time.
Multicultural and diverse environment to work in.
Fund raisers and staff nights out organised pretty regularly.

    Cons

A day of routine with little to no differentiation if you're working in distribution.
Not a vast number of opportunities to grow within the company.
Holidays/time off during the Christmas period is strictly prohibited.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with and respect your team better. Miscommunication leads to uncertainty and errors. Do not favouritise staff - this not only aggravates other colleagues but also demotivates them.

I have been working at hmv full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

-Canadian Flagship location, 3 floors of retail and a lower level that is a event space that has played host to the biggest music superstars.
-Empowered to create unique offers and promotions for the Toronto Superstore customer differentiating ourselves from any other location in the country.
-Constant focus on product mix evolvement, allowing a lot of creativity in merchandising and promotions to encourage the customers to branch out from just purchasing core product lines.
-"First name' culture. It's about knowing who you work with and establishing relationships that can benefit the business and your own development.

    Cons

-Limited career growth at my level. 5 years of downsizing has restricted the ability to go beyond what I am able to do.
-The core product is in a constant battle with technology and how consumers are choosing to purchase home entertainment.

    Pros

Some of the best people you will ever meet; as they are passionate about music/film as well
Learn a TON about new genres of music

    Cons

DMs and head office care only about the numbers, not the customers' wants/needs
Try and make you compete against your coworkers
    Went bankrupt in Canada.
    RIP

    Advice to Management

Listen to what your staff in stores are saying, we warned for years about certain changes and they did nothing.

    Pros

Fantastic staff and store management. Real sense of 'we can do this '.

    Cons

Forever trying to implement change without looking at resources. Great ideas - poorly carried out.

    Advice to Management

Look after your store teams - Be realistic with tasks

I have been working at hmv part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lovely environment with nice staff, good products being sold. easy enough job which pretty much involves locating something for a customer or tidying up, no proper uniform and flexible hours

    Cons

Pay is horrendous, massive pressure to sell pure cards every shift, underlooked if you're not seen as the perfect seller, no break at all if you work under 6 hours, very monotonous after a while, ridiculous amount of 'performance' programmes online to complete

    Advice to Management

The whole PureHMV scheme has to be changed or loosened with its rigidity, consider the pressures of having to sell and improve general attitude towards sales assistants

I worked at hmv part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    None. Absolutely none at all.

    Cons

Paid for "pure" card which we have to push on customers which gives them very little in return. You could buy the rewards on eBay for much less. Signed posters fpr example... available off the shelf for about £25 from online retailers, customers would have to spend £10,000 in hmv to acrue enough points to purchase one. Pure points also only last for a year before expiring. "Pure" profiteering at £3 per card if you ask me.

Ancient inventory management system and laboriously old fashioned POS methods.

Dejected staff that can't wait to leave at the end of their shift.

    Very low wages.

Incompetent management, flawed purchasing strategy, lack of movement with the times.

Interview was like an X factor audition and unnecessary 2nd interview for a part time sales advisor.

    Advice to Management

It isn't 1999 any more. You haven't changed since then. It is absolutely no wonder you aren't doing well and you have massive staff turnover.
