While many people use the terms "caregiver" and "home health aide" interchangeably, the role of a Home Health Aide (HHA) in California is distinct, regulated, and highly specialized. At Interim HealthCare, we believe that understanding these specific duties is essential for families making informed decisions about home care, dementia care, and long-term wellness. In this guide, we will explore the California-specific scope of practice for HHAs, their medical and personal responsibilities, and how they differ from other types of in-home providers. What is a Home Health Aide in California? In California, a Home Health Aide (HHA) is a certified health professional who provides a mix of personal care and basic medical assistance. Unlike a general caregiver or Personal Care Aide (PCA), an HHA must complete a state-approved training program—typically 120 hours—and be certified by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Because of this rigorous training, HHAs are authorized to perform certain clinical tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Physical Therapist. They serve as the "eyes and ears" of the medical team, ensuring that a patient’s condition is monitored closely between doctor visits. Read more.

A Shift in Focus: From General to Specialized Before 2020, the focus of health care staffing agencies was often on filling a high volume of generalist positions like nurses and CNAs. While these roles remain essential, the pandemic’s aftershocks revealed the need for more targeted expertise. Healthcare facilities are now seeking professionals with specific skills to address complex long-term care needs, chronic conditions, and new treatment modalities. For example, roles like telehealth specialists, infection control nurses, and respiratory therapists are now in high demand. These are not just temporary needs; they are becoming permanent fixtures of the healthcare ecosystem. A forward-thinking health care staffing agency must understand these nuances and have the networks to source and place these niche professionals. Advanced Sourcing and Recruitment: Agencies are moving beyond traditional job boards to target platforms and communities where specialized professionals gather. This includes leveraging professional associations, online forums, and social media groups specific to a certain medical field. Click to read more...
