      Sales Manager Interview

      11 Oct 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at AO wireless (Austin, TX) in May 2019

      Interview

I'm very happy I turned down the offer to work there! I was introduced to the company by a friend who knew they were looking to hire a sales manager. The CEO/Owner contacted me for an introductory phone interview and requested that I take a personality test first. A phone interview ensued and then a short interview over coffee. All seemed fine until it came time for the in person interview which is where the owner's true attitude, personality, behavior and character revealed itself. I was invited to come their HQ for lunch and an interview. I arrived at 11:25 for an 11:30 interview and was left waiting in what barely passes for a lobby for 30 minutes while the CEO/Owner took care of a customer installation problem. No problem, I can wait. Visibly shaken, the owner finally finished up and joined the meeting with myself and another person in their ramshackle conference room without an explanation or apology as to why he was so late. Over the next 3.5 hours, we discussed the business, goals, and history of the company. I came prepared with good questions about how they sell, market, and support customers so that I could understand the business and determine if there was a fit for me or not. EVERY single question I asked, no matter how innocuous, was met with indignation and incredulity by the owner. He was constantly defensive and let me know multiple times what a great salesman he was and what great training and mentoring he had. At two points during the meeting, I had to pause and explain that I was not pointing out faults in the company and was only trying to understand how they run the company. He was combative the entire time. I'm just glad that I got to see his true colors before, rather than after. And no, I never got lunch despite being there for over 3 hours. The owner is a classic case of narcissistic personality disorder with a generous layering of bad people management held over from his time in the military. He is good at covering this up initially as most narcissists are when they are trying to sell you something. He likes to talk about how all of his employees are family and what a devout christian he is but he fires people on a whim regularly without providing a professional 2 weeks (his excuse is that this is a right to work state and it is legal...this is true but hardly ethical especially for someone that claims to be family and christian oriented) notice and yells and screams at employees. I know this because I called and spoke with some of the employees. I was informed that the job was mine if I wanted it but I happily passed on this opportunity.
