      Account Manager Contractor Interview

      19 Oct 2019

      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Airbnb

      Interview

I was contacted via email by a general recruiting team alias and asked to complete a take-home assignment. This assignment was fairly straightforward - take a sample host profile provided and create a 1 slide pitch in google slides driving the value of Plus. Shortly after, I was asked to choose days/times I was available for a video interview to pitch my slide to a panel. It was set about 1 week out. I arrived on time, the group showed up a few minutes late. The very top of the interview I was told the 30 minutes would be spent: 1. Sales pitch, 2. Questions on my background, 3. Time for me to ask questions. The sales pitch was average - the role called for 6+ years of experience, which I have, so I found it a pretty standard role play. They did throw a lot of objections to overcome, though. This took around 15 minutes. Then they asked me a few questions about my resume; they were basic questions that did not allow me the opportunity to deeply connect in stories or metrics, but for a first 30 minute interview, there was not much time for them either. This took about 10 min or so, leaving me with only 2 minutes for questions. I had a short list of 3 questions I had prepared - mostly to help me understand if this contractor role was the right fit for me (having never been a contractor for a large company before, I wanted to better understand the structure.) My first question was answered very vaguely, and my second was not even answered. I never got to my third. My second question was answered, "how about I answer that if you are afforded a next interview?" My face likely showed my exact feelings because it was followed by, "it's nothing personal, we are getting kicked out of the room." Then the video conference was abruptly ended. There was zero follow up or formal/polite goodbye. I knew then I was not interested in joining the team - I found a lack of respect for my time and talent - I took the time to do a homework assignment before ever talking to anyone on the phone or even having a name to connect with - all emails were signed as a general recruiting team sign off. I took the time to connect for the video call and was on time, but was cut off abruptly because of their resources. I emailed the recruiting team to politely take me out of consideration as it was not the right fit for me due to my questions going unanswered, as well as the poor experience thus far. I never receiced a response from them about that poor experience. I did receive a reminder email from the recruiting team afterward stating they were all looking forward to my upcoming interview, to which I had to email back explaining that I had already interviewed and they admitted they confused my dates and to ignore the reminder. Fast forward another week, I got an email stating they had decided they were not moving forward with me. I don't even think they took the time to read my concerns or email after I explained I was uninterested. This experience was negative overall. I felt like they believed their time was more valuable than the candidates and that the process was overall herding, not taking into consideration that if they are looking for someone qualified with over 6 years of experience, the name AirBNB is not enough to recruit them to a 1-year contract role.
