Software Quality Assurance Test Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at California Casualty (Orlando, FL) in Mar 2025

      Interview

The interview process started with a phone screen with HR. They asked scenario-based questions related to the role and behavioral questions. They also asked about my salary expectations. An hour-long technical interview with a two-member panel followed that. I did exceptionally well there and was asked to provide FIVE professional references, two of which needed to be from a manager. I found that to be an exaggeration from the standard three references that are usually requested by other employers, but I provided that to them nonetheless. I was also asked to complete a rigorous background check (that took about 10 days to come back clean). I received a phone call from the hiring manager with a "verbal" offer while the background check was still pending. The only problem was that the offer was about 20% below market value. I communicated that to them and told them it fell well short of my salary expectations I had given to HR during the phone screen. I asked them if there were any other benefits that accompanied the offer. They said the company has a 401(k) match and a yearly bonus, but they could not provide any details on exact figures and said that they would get back to me. They also said there was a chance they would present a higher offer and that I would hear back from them in a day or two. I followed up with them a week later and told them I was open to negotiating the offer, but THEY IGNORED ME. It is disrespectful and unprofessional for an organization to have candidates go through such an arduous and time-consuming hiring process to end up turning off communication with them. They could have at least acknowledged my message and said it was their final offer, instead, they chose to keep me in limbo. But I'm glad they did because it shows their true colors, and it's not a place where I would want to invest time in.

Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your experience with our interview process did not meet your expectations. While we strive to be thorough in our evaluations—through technical and behavioral interviews, reference checks, and background screenings—we understand that a lengthy process without timely follow-up can be discouraging. That’s not the experience we aim to create for candidates. Your concerns about the offer and communication are especially important. Timely follow-ups related to an offer should be a given, and we regret that you were left without the clarity and responsiveness expected. This is an area where we clearly fell short in your case, and we are actively reviewing what steps could have been taken to avoid this outcome. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience—it helps us continue to improve as an organization. We wish you the best in your future career pursuits.
